Strange substance on car after washing?

I zaiono'd my car maybe 6 - 8 months ago, haven't been too great about applying it since, but just today went to take off all the polish so I could use some touch up paint on a scratch. I washed the car with dawn, hosed it off, clay bar'd the car, washed with dawn again, then went to the dry the car. I noticed when I'd wipe the car with my towels it wouldn't look dry, just look kind of wet still and have a rainbow colored "oily" appearance. This happened last time I washed the car but I just thought it was the polish, but washing the car twice with dawn should get rid of all the zaino on there, right? even if I applied many coats originially? I basically have to buff the rainbow looking swirls out, which makes me think its polish thats still on there, but anyone else know what this is?

This is going to sound strange, and some of you may disagree, but I have been doing this for YEARS and I assure you no harm will come to your paint.

Get yourself a nice clean cloth and some Varsol. That's tight - Varsol. Also known as Mineral Spirits. Wipe the car down with varsol - this will get rid of any grime, tar, etc. Then go through your wax process.

When I have been on a long highway trip, I wash the car, wipe it down with varsol, then apply Meguires #6 Cleaner Wax. I follow this up with a coat of Mother's Carnauba. I tried Meguires #26 Yellow Wax which did a great job. But when I would subsequently wash my car, my chamois dragged across the paint. With Mother's, it's smooth. Oddly enough, I use Meguires #26 on my wife's '97 1.6 EL and it is nice and smooth after a wash. Go figure!

Finally, use that Varsol on your windshield. You can even wipe your wiper blades down with it. Googbye wiper streaks.

Sorry for the long-winded response. My '03 TL-S is black and it looks like a million bucks!

I got that too. Here is what I did to get rid of it. You need to really soap it well then you need to really rinse your car (lots of water) after washing. I dried it off with a towel and a bucket of clean water to get rid of the remaining water from the car. Good luck.

I don't think the rainbow effect is the left over zaino. If anything, it may be some dawn residue. Dawn will weaken the zaino, but not fully remove it. So what dlpickering is recommending is a good idea.

What did you use as a lubricant when you clay'd your car?

I just used my soapy water (dawn soap) to lubricate the clay bar, but I had the same problem last time and I didn't even clay bar the car. I thought it might be a residue left on my towels but my girlfriend washed her car at the same time with the same towels and she didnt have the same problem. So mineral spirits aren't bad for the paint? they're not like paint thinner are they?

No, Mineral Spirits and Paint Thinner are 2 completely different products.

Incidentally, Mineral Spirits also work well on grease/oil spots on the carpet. In moderation of course.

thanks, I'll try out the mineral spirits. I'm still wondering what was left on the car though, it wouldn't be related to soft water would it (the last 2 times I had the rainbow effect on my car I was using soft water).

When I washed my friend's TL with dawn to prep for Zaino, the dawn left rainbow swirls on the paint. Try washing it with car wash soap before you attack the swirls with mineral spirits. While mineral spirits won't harm the paint, it's best to try the less serious attempts first.

I use Meg's Gold Class car shampoo with water in a spray bottle for clay lube. I would think dawn would be kind of "sticky". I still think the rainbow effect is left over dawn residue.
