springs
If your dealing with aftermarket springs and they are of the "lowering" variety then, yes, different shocks are needed. Ones that have a shorter stiffer travel.
I your replacing stock length springs (non-lowering) with the same ride height then a stock shock will be fine. But, yes, they will (like everything else) were out; both stock and aftermarket.
All the shocl does is keep the tires planted on th epavement as long as possible through bound and rebound. They also keep the car from bouncing continually after the spings have been flexed. The springs keep the car from bottoming out over bumps and absorb the more abrupt pavement changes.
So the springs absorb the bump and the shocks settle the spring down after it does.

I'm interested in this too ... I'm probably gonna be getting CompTech Springs to lower my car just a tad and am wondering if I should be putting Koni shocks on my car at the same time, or if I can wait awhile (Only 7800 miles on the car now though)

I lowered my car with Comptech springs the day I brought it home from the dealership with 9 miles on it.........and even though I'm sure the stock shocks would have lasted for a while, I opted to replace them with Illuminas. I just can't stand it when people ride around lowered on stock shocks.....just seems like the ghetto way to lower the car. If you want just "the look" than the stock shocks will be okay for a while (but they are gonna blow eventually), but if you want added performance and ride quality, aftermarket shocks are a must in my opinion.
Believe me, I have seen people who were so tight on their budgets but so eager to lower their cars that they actually have the stock springs cut. A turn or two is cut from the stock springs and bingo - dirt cheap lowering, but the car will bottom like crazy because the spring travel is all screwed up.
