Sport Shifting Problem

This afternoon, i was at a red light in sports shift, as i accelerated, when the rpm reached between 4000-5000, it seemed like the gears got stuck or there was a dleay or something. Nevertheless i never shifted into the second gear, i was still in gear 1 on sports shifts? Whats goin on???

By pushing the shift knob forward you go to the next gear and downard to downshift. If you keep on gasing and not shift then of course it will stay in the same gear... hence the name sequential SportShift. What's the point of calling it that if it shifts up and down automatically like it does in D4? Hope that helps.

question: doesn't the '99 TL shift automatically to second gear when using the SportShift?
my '00 does this, it's only after I am in Second gear that I have to shift to third - four etc.

If indeed this does not work for the '99 then I agree with subtledreamer, if the '99 does shift to second on it's own, then you may not have been in first? Are you sure you where stuck in first??

I thought the sportshift automatically switches to second when accelarating in sport stick. I might be mistaken. I know it drops from 2nd to 1st automatically to keep people from damaging the transmission.

Interesting, that means PKCK2332 actually has an issue with his SportShift, is this possibly a transmission issue?? Not with an Acura! Ha

I believe that 00-03's sportshit upshifts to 2nd automatically at a certain rpm. But for '99, it'll always stay in 1st gear until you upshift.

The same is true for 3rd gen TL.

what i meant to say is that while in first gear in SS mode, it seemed the transmission kinda delayed between 4000-5000rpm. i was planning on shifting at 5000rpm but at like 4500rpm it seemd to kinda of stallor delay.

yes, the 00-03s ss goes into second from first AUTOMATICALLY. the rmp at which it upshifts depends on how hard your pressing the gas.

i meant to say '04 TL is the same as 00-03 in the sense that it upshifts to 2nd gear at a certain rpm. sorry about that!

The 99 TL gives you complete control over all four gears (it will occasionally let you break redline, or sit there bashing into your rev limiter if you don't shift).

Acura managed to destroy the SS mode by having the auto-1-2 upshift in 2000. Worst of all, especially with the 03s and 04s, if you are accellerating quickly, it can screw up your 2-3 shift by not accepting input from the controls until well after you're in 2nd.

Pull up the grey ring around the shift gate, take off the shift knob, undo the four clips around the shift gate (the brushed chrome, or chrome if you did the mod) with a screwdriver. Then you'll see two plastic strips which make up the area under. Take them out and especially clean in between them and on top for any crumbs, or coke, or coffee, etc. Might be a good idea to clean the underside of the shift gate too.

since the shifter is not actually connected mechanically to the tranny (as it is in a standard car), anything to do with the shifter probably has little to do with the tranny. If it still sticks, take it into the dealer... maybe your springs are worn [though it's probably just dirt].
