Speedometer not correct?

I have 2000 TL w/ 115XXX miles. I was driving down freeway (speed limit 60mph) on cruise at 68 according to my speedometer and it was showing my speed at 65 on my GPS unit (TomTom). A cop pulled me over saying that I was speeding at 68 mph and just gave me a warning But when I put the GPS unit on my mom's van, speed on speedometer and GPS is same. Is there a way to check if my speedometer is working at correct speed? can both my GPS and my mom's van's speedometer be wrong giving exact same speed?

wow cop pulled you over for doing 8 over the limit?
my gps is within 1 or 2 mph of my TL. my mom's mazda 6 is within 1 mph of my gps.
do you have after market rims? different sized tires? that will thro off ur speedo. but it seems like your speedo is correct and ur gps is off from what you said.

the gen2 is known to have a 5% high reading odometer-
which means the speedo also reads fast- 3mph differance between the speedo and the gps, I would blame that.
gps said 65 - thats what you were going- speedo 68 is close,, and why most cops will spot you a few mph over the limit. More than 5 is reason enough to check you out.

Speed Limit was 60....where is the confusion in this thread- the speedo was not 8 mph off, the driver was~

Even 1 mph over is speeding- its all about where the local police chief has set the enforcement level, and what other types of violations they are looking for that week..
excess tint, tires outside the fender edge...

you know what i was just thinking about that cus our odometer is off by 5% and the odometer and speedometer must be the same mechanism right? but i think our speedos are correct for the most part. cus i do remember asking somone at the dealer and i think they said that the speedo is fine.
