Spark plugs
yea i would get either of the 2 i listed. i wouldnt change teh coils unless you are having problems with them. ours seem to be of good quality. i have 143,000 miles and they still work great
There is really no sense in changing to another platinum plug. The one that comes stock in the car is a long life NGK platinum.
Here's a link to info on what is basically the plug that comes in our cars stock.

If you make any change, I would suggest Denso iridiums. NGK iridiums have a thicker center electrode (which is basically the same size as your stock one).
Look on eBay - I got them for about $8.50 each.

The fact that the TL's exhaust tips form carbon only means that you're really getting on the throttle a lot. If you never went about 1/4 to 1/3 throttle the tips wouldn't turn black like that (catalytic convertor would burn it all up).
When's the last time you checked your air filter? A dirty air filter can make you run a little rich (I don't know if our car's sensors would make up for that through).

agreed. changing the plugs isnt necessary. i changed mine a little over 100k (denso iridiums) and i didnt need to. they were still in good shape, and the car still idled smooth, rand great and got good gas mileage

It's up to you. Changing an air filter is not a really big issue. If you're looking to keep your same setup and just change the filter, any one of the paper filters out there can do that. In the past I've used both Fram and Purolator with good results.
If you're looking make improvements, K&N is not a bad idea. The jury is out on the performance or MPG benefits on the TL (probably better, but not much).

how you guys get to the plugs next to the firewall? There is not much room between the firewall and the plugs. Iridium plugs are the bettter choice because Iridium has lower resistance than platium. Irudiun plugs fire faster and easier than Platium.
I got my rear plugs by using two small extensions on my spark plug socket. You start out with only one extension, lower the socket in the hole, and then attach the second extension. Overall - the length is perfect.
