So my car is now at Acura of Lynnwood

Waiting for the tranny to be replaced

Here's the dealio:

Started slipping on Thursday night. The bugger wouldn't show its symptom when I was driving on the freeway to work on Friday. Called the dealership, made an appointement for 12.30pm. On the way home it started to act up. On the way to dinner, it showed more symtom like not engaging the next gear and revs up really high. Engaging the reverse gear took several minutes. I couldn't even make it up the hill. Limped home.
THis morning, it was fine, which leads me to believe that the problem would only occur when the tranny get hot. Half-mile away from the dealership, it started to happen. COuldn't engage the next gear or would rev up really high until you depress the gas pedal, wait for a second or two then it engages. Then the warning light comes on (in the form of a triangle with an (!) inside it)
Had a service guy drive it. Said they'll took a look at it. Got me a TSX to drive (NBP/Camel). Called me 2 hours later, "It's the tranny"
Gonna go back to Acura of Lynnwood to trade the TSX for a different one since the warning light came on while I was driving too....

The service guy said that they'll have the tranny delivered next week, possibly on Tuesday. The first tranny was replaced @ 38k. The car now has 58K+ on it.

Wish me luck with the new one

Yea when they get hot the clutchpacks loose their ability to hold it in gear. Once they cool they will grab until they get hot again.

Good luck

What are the chances that the tranny they'll put in there wouldn't fail again? 50/50? Is there a way to prevent the clutchpack from failing so quickly? I'm not an aggressive driver most of the time.

The dealership rep said that the battery needs replacing. Do I need to get a high performance one? Optima (yellow? red?) isn't it? Should I just stick with the good old Die Hard brand?

So what You guys are basically sayin is that people like me that live up north in canada, are kinda clear of tranny problems becuase of the temprature difference? If it was true, it kinda makes sense.

There is Nothing you can do to prevent the clutch packs from dying. What are the chances that it will fail again? only time will tell. Honda upgraded some internal parts in 2005 for us so hopefully they will last longer or not fail. Only time will tell. As far as i know no one with the newer designed parts has had 1 fail yet but it is still early.

for the battery, if you dont have a big stereo a dihard would be fine. I do recomend the Red Top optima though. they are a great battery. I have one thats 8 years old and is still as good as the day i bought it

sorry about the tranny man! Know the feelin all too well. Mine went about 27k. My wifes 2000tlp is still going strong. When my tranny went on my 2003tls the stealer was trying to blame my unichip as part of the problem, but still replaced it with no problem. Good luck

I'm not sure about the temperature thing because it's been getting really cold this month. I don't know if others from your neck of the wood has had any tranny problem, though I don't wish it on you.

hinshaws in fife, they knew they didn't have a pot to piss in as soon as they knew i was aware of the acura tranny issue. They discovered it was thier error when they kept trying to install a tlp module in my tls. And yes that is pretty damn lame!!

Well, I hope I get the tranny with the upgrade parts.

About Optima.... what's the major difference between RedTop and YellowTop?

You wont have to trickle charge the red top like the yellow top each week per Optimas recommendation.

So RedTop is for normal cars that want extra performance?

Yup. They did. It's a nice car. I'm diggin' the NBP/Camel combo. When I first came to Acura of Lynnwood, they gave me an RSX . The TSX is a world apart compare to the RSX. It's a light car with a very responsive, rev happy powertrain. A good combo that make the car feels faster than my TLS. The interior lighting is so very nice. The bright EL guages are awesome. Easily the favorite part of the car for me.

Anyway, I stopped by the dealership today, in the morning, and they've already took out the old tranny. They said they're just waiting for the new one to arrive, possibly today. I'll wait for their call tomorrow. I wonder if I can pick it up on Thursday, which coincidentally is Thanksgiving day. It'll be the only time I can pick it up though... Might end up doing it on Friday....
