So i replaced my front and rear mounts...

Hey guys,

I ended up buying all three mounts (front, side and rear) thinking they were all shot. I tried replacing the side mount only to find out that it was fine, so I left the old one in. I had someone replace the front and rear mount today, and out of the two the front was fine but the rear was shot (cracked and leaking fluid). I had him replace the front one anyway since I dont want to be bothered with having to do that labor myself if the old one did end up failing sometime in the future.

So anyway, I had hoped that my banging into gear would be solved by replacing the mounts, only to be disappointed. I also hoped that the clunking that I was hearing over small bumps was mount related (banging metal), but that didn't disappear either.

Other than that, I did notice a little bit of an improvement with the steering wheel vibrations (almost none now where where was a slight vibration before).

I'm quite annoyed that I still have the banging. The only conclusion is that it is indeed the tranny. I wont be replacing it when it fails - just too much to spend on a 13 year old car. This was the last big spend i wanted to do on the car (had timing belt / pump / valve adjustment done early this year).

As for the suspension, I dont want to start replacing things left and right when I dont really know whats wrong with it. Two mechanics today told me that everything looked fine. I know the end links go bad on these cars which causes a clunking, but when looking at it, it didn't have any play at all when the car was up on the lift.

Does anyone have any other ideas on what is causing the banging / clunking that I could inspect?

Thanks

Are you lowered? If so i think the clanking sound is your upper control arm banging against the top area of the strut tower. happens to me when i go over bumps.

Try to find its location. Front left/right? Just narrow it down.

I tried doing that. I can't say if it's coming from the left OR the right, maybe middle?

I looked at it from under the car a couple of months ago, and it didnt look broken. I can recheck it through.

Does anyone know if a broken mount is visually obvious? Or is it something you can only determine once you remove it?

Thanks
