So, am I F'd?!?
So, am I F'd?!?
So I just bought an 01 TL with 36k miles from a dealership (non acura), and now I'm seeing all this stuff about tranny problems. I checked the Acura website and entered my vin # and both recalls are saying "open" (asuming the one previous owner did not have this issue checked) So, are all 2nd gen trannys garbage, and did I just buy myself a car thats going to need a tranny in the near future? It drives/shifts fine now. Guess I'm just trying to to see if odds are I'll need a new tranny before 100k or....?
water pump and timing belt at 36k??? I wouldnt worry about it. I didnt do mine til 186xxx lol. I dont recommend doing that at all but i did. If there are open recalls then take it in and let them do it. Its not like its gonna cost you anything. Then u can get a cool rental for a little while. My tranny died at 118k and they covered parts. I just paid labor. Some people never had tranny issues. Its just up to chance.

at nearly 10 years old, it still needs to be done.
ask some of the NSX guys with 94' vehicles if they didnt change their belts b/c they are under 50K

belts get old, reguardless of miles.

I'd be happy as heck to have an '01 with 36K
My '00 has 113K, no issues.
Tranny issue hit under 1%, Acura claims.
If it goes, it goes. Under $4000 and you have a brand new car.

I had my tranny replaced at 105k miles, 2 weeks right after I changed the tranny fluid myself. But acura covered the entire tranny job, didn't have to pay for labor either. It was recalled, should mean that you don't pay for shit.
I did pay for a timing belt change and motor mounts replacement though, and that cost around 700? I don't remember, probably more than that. I did get a rental, but they gave me a shitty ford taurus death mobile with bald tires, it couldn't handle in the rain.
If you wanna avoid the tranny replacement, I would go to a shop or acura and have them flush out the tranny fluid whenever you decide to change the tranny fluid. Your car should be covered though. and if it is still covered, I would change the fluid myself and than have it die in 2 or so weeks lol, and have acura replace it. but only if you know for certain that it's still covered. Hope this helps and its not too much and good luck with your vehicle. I still love my car and the way it handles.
and there are plenty of threads about this situation. a lot of problems regarding the tranny, hence the recall.

first thing- OPEN means that recall has not been taken care of
So get an appointment with the dealer for the OIL JET KIT
thats free
They do a boroscope inspection inside the trans for certain specific heat damage- if found you get a free replacement trans
If good inside on heat ck- they install an external line into the filler hole that sprays trans oil onto 2nd gear shaft and helps cool it--there was a big problem with those failing and the car stops from 70
That has nothing to do with the normal clutch wearout we all face,
but Im guessing 3 qts of new honda atf at the dealer is a good idea now
And change the brake fluid and ps fluid--based on age
the other one on the recall -does it says Airbag Inflator -Recall- tell dealer that too
If other thing says Trans Extended Warranty- you are part of the `covered VINs` but well past the time limit--it will still say open but doesnt mean that
welcome to acurazine- take care of your new car and it will take care of you

That % claim is ONLY for the 2nd gear shaft failure (which is what the oil jet kit is for) and has NOTHING to do with the 3rd gear clutchpack failures that every one has.
That was more like 2-3%, and that was in 2004 (most likely for 2nd gear problem,, which is not the common problem for failure), now as a lot of transmissions got older and got more miles on them the number is much higher. If original transmission has over 70-80K miles it has a good chance of failing, probably the number is 10-20%, but there is no official number
Precisely, this was the number Honda HAD to report to NHTSA in regards with safety investigation which was for 2nd gear only. They would never report a number that had nothing to do with safety. They gave government the bare minimum information they had to give. I also have a problem that it was in 2004, at that time most of the cars were low miles.
if it's still under the recall, you should bring it in and have it fixed...the tranny problems can't really be avoided but i guess just don't drive the car the way it wasn't meant the be driven and you should be fine
