Smoked a hooked up Maxima
I was comming home late last night and these guys in a maxima (what I later find out to be a 96 5-speed w/ intake, y-pipe, and exhaust) pull up next to me and ask me to run. Since it was really late and no one was on the road, i said why not. First time, we went for a 50 mph roll, and gunned it. I immediately started walking him, and he ended up about 1.5-2 car lengths behind my back bumper to ~100 mph. These guys were in shock, and pulled up next to me and wanted to go again. This time we went from a 40 mph roll, and it was the same result. It sounded like evertime he had to shift, I had just hit the sweet spot of VTEC, and he just got burnt.
Anyways, we ended up pulling over and talking. These kids were amazed and asked what I had under the hood. Told them I was basically stock except for a Comptech filter (they couldnt believe it). The kid told me he smoked a CL-S before, and I told him the CL-S driver probably didnt know how to drive since the cars are pretty much the same. He also told me that was the first time he got beat like that, which i thought was pretty funny.
Score another for the TL-S!

nice job!!!
what method did you use to beat him? when you hit 50 MPH, did you basically put the pedal to the floor or do you have the car in SS mode, gear it down, then gradually push the gas...
I find that when I gear the car down to 2nd gear, then gradually push the gas, the acceleration is far better then if I were to put the gas to the floor.
Even though the force of the car seems less, all I do is stare at the spedometer and realize how fast the car is gaining in speed.
No point in flooring your car...use the features like SS mode which help you to gain speed without wearing out your car. If you put the pedal to the floor all the time, you're almost shocking your engine into kicking itself in the ass to get you moving, and in the long run, you will end up losing all your races. Just make sure when you race to have the A/C off, and VSA off (unless it's wet out), and keep the car in SS mode. Make sure to shift properly, cause if you forget to shift, you lose a lot of time.
Hope this helps for ppl in the future!!

Forgot to mention: I was in SS already, and downshifted to 2nd before we ran. Shifted a little past the redline at ~7100 RPM to 3rd in SS. It's defintely the best way to run in our cars!

I have a question about the 7100RPM thing....
did you feel the rev limiter kick in at 7100RPM? cause if you exceed 7000 RPM in SS mode without shifting, the car will jerk back and forth to prevent you from burning out the engine...it's probably the worst thing to do when in a race as the rev limiter cxan affect your times substantially...
what I try to do is as soon as I see the gauge about to go past 6000RPM, I hit the upshift on the gearshift...which usually causes me to shift somewhere around 6600-6800 RPM...gives you the most overall amounts of power.
good run though!!!

You have to time it just right to not bounce the rev limiter. I wait until I reach around 6900 RPM and then shift because there is a small delay before the gear changes. This way, the car shifts around 7050 or 7100 rmp without the rev limiter kicking in.

Unlike tl maxima is available with manual shift, its nice to manually shift. vroom

Vandy,
That's exactly the way that I race: shift exactly at 6900 RPM, which delays to about 7100 RPMs without bouncing off the rev limiter.
