Red face Side by Side!

Saturday I come up on a Bmw M3. I`m thinking easy kill! But, I didn`t relize that I had a handycap, My Wife was in the car. So at the line, I`m tring not to tip my hand(so the wife doesn`t start bitching early) I take off the VSA, The light changes, Dammit my tires start to squell, and so does my wife! He`s on his game, jumps a half car a head, My wife and I shifts to second, She saying, why do we have to do this every damm time! I`m starting to even up then a truck pulls in frount of us. :banghead:
Someone once asked, what option I would like to see come out in the new TLs? The CONE OF SILINCE! , for the wife!

hahahaha nice story, but sounds doubtful. You gotta get your wife to feel more comfortable when you're behind the wheel. Best thing to do is what I did with my dad. Take her out every once in a while for a joy ride. Try to explain the functionality of VTEC, the gear ratios (the the TL has literally nothing after 3rd gear), and how there's a bit of a sag in the powerband when cruising at about 60 km/h (35-37 MPH)...and shit like that. That way she feels for confident with the drive, and will let you open up on it once in a while with her in the car.

BTW, no way in hell you would have a chance against an M3. I tried it once for fun, those things make our 2nd gear look like a joke. After 60 km/h it's almost like the TL's fall asleep, and the M3's wake up!!!

no jokes, they are fast, but you pay double for it compared to the TL-S.

What year M3, E46 or E36?

E36, yeah you could keep up with it, maybe even beat it with a good driver.

No way in holy he!! are you gonna keep up with a late model M3. A stock TLS... bwahaaaa Your wife isn't the handicap, your ego is.

lol.. :lol2:

I hear ya.. I was messing around with a new Audi A6 on the highway the other day, from the toll booth into traffic. I was right on the guys a$#.. We were weaving in and out of traffic. My wife said the same thing, "Why the hell," blah, blah, blah....

He didn't want to play anymore, so... That was the end of that..

you were thinking easy kill? for who, him? You can probably keep up with an M3 modded but a stock TL-S does NOT stand a chance! I played with an M5 once and I remember how much I was laughing that I couldn't even keep up with him, and I'm modded!

Hmmm, I'm seeing two handicaps here....

1) You're in a TL
2) He's in an M3

If it was a pre-2001 M3 you MAY have had a shot... but if it was a newer M3 then he was being nice and not kicking your ass in front of the wife.... b/c he would take you pretty easily.

Ladies, Ladies, Ladies, First off I belive it was a 99 - 00. Repainted Bright orange! I was watching him for awhile, he was dancing thru traffic. Nothing to special, quick in the low gears.
I pulled up at the light, half/back so he could not see much. Dry roads, 1/4 tank, vsa off, Ready. Light changed My tires burned out, ran up to 65-73, pretty even. Both shut down at the same time, I was still half/back and pissed!
I do remeber the badging M3. If he was holding back, I couldn`t tell. I do know He was a Marine, They don`t normally hold back!
KLtorch, pull your head out of your xss.
I`ve been street racing since I was 16. Long before most of you were still a glimmer in your Daddys eye and the best part of you was running down your momma`s leg!

I know of a looser who got the "M" package on a 3 seriese BMW. It comes from the dealership just like our A-spec package. Don't be so critical in your comments guys, people who put up threads are looking for some constructive criticism :ar15: This guy might be another doornob who bought the M pakage, who knows. But the custom paint job would make me think it wasn't an actual M3, IMO, If you had an M3 you would probably go with rims and everything else, paint would be the last "crowning touch" to a modded car. And if he has gone as far as painting his M3 a custom color, his engine MODs wouldn't allow you to read his licence plate, IMO obviously.

i can already feel the heat from the flames but here goes-
i work with one guy that has a 03 m3 6 speed (manual/not smg) and
another guy that has a 03 350z 6 speed (manual)
both are totally stock
after busting each other's chops for weeks they went out for a race which turned into races and the 350 spanked the m3 every time. the guy in the m3 just simply does not know how to shift and his 340 hp means nothing when he can't put it to the ground.

Thats the newer M3.....i think some of you are missing the point that it COULD have been the E36 Model which is 240 at the crank.... so its a close race if you "do da math"

Why do you say it has nothing after 3rd? The difference between 3rd and 4th don't seem to be any more extreme than the difference between 2nd and 3rd. What do you mean by "there's a bit of a sag in the powerband when cruising at about 60km/h"? The engine is going to make the same hp at a given rpm, no matter what speed it is going. Sure, each higher gear gets less torque to the ground than the previous, but that's the case for all cars. Why would you say it's dead after 3rd gear?

Have you driven your TL lately??? Cause I just did this morning, and the sag in the powerband is still there. When you are cruisin at about 60 km/h, you are out of range to fly back to first gear, and you are at the bottom end of 2nd. It takes the car a couple seconds to pull you from bottom of second to around 90 km/h. You'll notice that even if you floor it, there's not as much power as say at 40 km/h, when the car will gear back to first to give you that awesome kick that the TL has.

And the difference between 2nd and third??? I find that second is a very powerful gear, but 3rd is also tremendous at making you win a race on the highway. Now 4th and 5th, there's absolutely nothing left. Take a look at the gear ratios, 3rd is something like 1.3, and 4th is like 0.87...so there's a big difference. I don't think my ratio numbers are correct, but you get the idea. After 180 km/h, the TL slows down a tremendous amount.

SC354,
I have driven a TL lately (this morning, like you), but mine isn't broken in yet, so I haven't been ripping through the gears yet. The TL has a nice, flat torque curve, getting it's peak(208 @ the wheel) around 5k, but it's making at least 200 everywhere above 3k. The bottom of 2nd (after a shift from 1st at redline) is going to be making within 8 ft#'s of the peak torque. It's not going to pull quite as hard, but it's going to be close. I just don't see where this "awesome kick" is. Do 8 ft#'s make an "awesome kick"? Of course 2nd is not going to pull as hard as 1st, as 3rd won't pull as hard as 2nd, but this isn't unique to the TL.

The gearing doesn't look to me to make a drastic change from 3rd to 4th. I think your numbers are off. The jump from 2nd to 3rd isn't any less (as a percentage) of a jump than the jump form 3rd to 4th.
1st 3.933
2nd 2.478
3rd 1.700
4th 1.250
5th 0.975
6th 0.770

I just don't see anything that would suggest the TL "dies" at highway speeds any worse than any other vehicle.

The guy in the M3 knows dick then....he must have launched in third Zs are fast no doubt but still more than half a second slower than an M3 in the quarter.

Either you are talking about a 6-speed 04TL or you don't know shit...I assume you are talking about an 04 though. In that case what SC said is true in a 03TLS because our 4th gear is similar to your 5th (an overdrive gear). This thread was in regards to an TLS (ie auto).

DOH!
There I go not thinking again! I guess when you drive a 6 speed, you forget that most people here have autos! My bad. And then, to top it off, I'm talking about an '04 to boot. I apologize for wasting space on this board with my inatentiveness. :o :smackhead
