Post Should I race my friend's Volvo S70 T5 with my reg TL?

I brought my 02 TL to school today and some friends challeneged me to a race. The most serious challenge was from a friend who drives a Volvo T5. However, since i just got my TL this week, it only has 200km on it. The recommended break in period is 1000 km. Do u think i can beat him? Suggestions? I also got a challenge from a manual 2001 323 Bimmer and a souped up civic (don't know how much though), but i think i can take the bimmer and prob the civic too....any suggestions?

If it's a manual T5, I don't think you could take it. Auto, maybe. You also have to consider the fact that even if your TL is just broken in, it still hasn't hit its "sweet spot" meaning it may perform better once it has 20 or 30k on it. You could probably take the Bimmer but if the Civic is a slammed Si, he may be tough.

I was also counting on the volvo's weight really dragging down it's performance in that category...i think it's way heavier than the TL is it not?

Dude,

Your parents must love you a whole lot if
you're taking your Type-S to school. There's
no way in God's name I would leave my car
in those crappy parking lots or downtown TO
streets (St George Campus street parking
scares me!)

As for the 'challengers'... the T5 manual
has some serious power. AJAC did their
tests for this year and the T5 matched a
Corvette Z06 from the 80-120km/h pass test
(based on their tests!) So that car has
some serious torque mid-range. But from a
dead start... it would depend on how well
your friend can shift...

The Bimmer... no worries there. 323s don't
even have 200hp and they're on the chubby
side. I wasn't impressed by them when I
test drove them back last year.

The Civic... c'mon! Unless the guy put in
a supercharger or other mods, you can take
on any factory Civic in Canada! (the new
ones they're making in the UK with i-VTEC
on the other hand...)

Just be sure to play it smart if you're
street racing. Cops are all over the place
these days!

The 323 BMW and the souped up Civic should be no problem at all. Don't let the exterior appearance fool you. It is mostly for show (most of the time). OTOH, the Volvo T5 can be a little problem depending if it is a manual.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

Cool

The Type S, which I assume is pretty close in weight to you TL, is 400 lbs HEAVIER than the current T5. I've seen 0-60 times for the T5 in the 6.3 to 6.6 range for both the current and previous T5 w/ manual tranny. A V70 T5 wagon will do it in the low 7's w/ auto tranny. The TL on the other hand ranges from 6.7(Motor Trend) to 7.4(Car and Driver). Bottom line -- you will have your hands full

If the Volvo guy knows how to launch his baby properly and is very good w/ a stick, he'll most certainly hand you your ass.

It totally depends what type of race you guys are doing. If its the type of races that I'm used to (not that I do it to often...but it would be the ones that I give the most respect to) then it all depends on how good/crazy you drive. A skilled civic driver who's smart enough not to get his ass busted by the cops could just as easily win in a 50 mile race. My normal commute one way is a little more than 40 miles, and I know first hand that on a 60-65 mile per hour traffic, that a civic hatchback would beat me. In the hands of a profesional it'll be different...but when it comes down to cutting people off all the time, I just dont have it within me to risk my baby like that. So...bottom line is...if your friends really want to race....challenge them to a long distance road trip and see if they bite. My route is usually from San Jose to San Francisco or San Jose to Santa Cruz, but if your not from around here, you wouldnt really have a clue. Oh...a radar detector would probably be your most efficient mod if your planning on doing non dragstrip type of races. But as for the Volvo T5....I wouldnt go against those.

I'll have to say i don't really like the appearance of the T5 but I am very impressed by it's performance in relation to fuel economy. I checked it's fuel economy and it's much better than the TL even though it has more horses and i think better torque.

BTW, i checked with my friend and it's not a manual! Although his car is at about 20 000 KM or 12 000 miles. So his car have been broken in nicely.
