Shift position for Japan and US
Hi,
Writing from Japan again.
Through enjoying this forum, I have noticed that the sift positions of my 2002 Saber are different from the ones of TL in the USA.
Mine is as follows.
P
R
N
D (1-5 automatic)
D3 (1-3 automatic)
2 (2nd gear hold)
1 (1st gear hold)
I have never used the position "1" but "2" is great when I start my Saber on snow.
Is yours P,R,N,D5,D4.D3 and 2-1??
If it is, don't you need to have "2" ((2nd gear hold)?

The 1999 TL here had a 4-speed automatic. The 2000+ models have a 5 speed auto. The shift gate in the 4 speed is exactly like yours, but obviously "D" means 4th gear, not 4th and 5th.
The 5-speed model's shift gate is similar to yours, except that your 1 is where our 2 is. To get to 1 we must pull the lever to the left. See this pic for clarification (this is a pic of my former 2000 TL)
Also, I'm 99% sure that our 2 position is a 2nd gear hold, as well.

Thank you for the input.
Now it is clear that yours have actually 8 positions.
The difference from mine is that I don't have D4 that is 1-4 automatic without 5th cruising gear.
I think that your are cool

Thank you very much for the reply.
Yes, I am proud of my Saber
But it is interesting why the equipments of Saber is so differnt from the ones of TL.
Shift position is different, it is curious.
Moonroof, cruise control, anti-theft and heated mirrors, we cannot get them at all.
DVD-Navi, it looks similar but I am not sure if yours can carry memory cards in it.
By the way, it is true that this vehicle is really exciting one!

The differences are:
1. Front grill
2. Rear combination lamp
3. Emblems
4. Alloy wheels
And finally dealer channels are different.
The list prices are also same.

However since HONDA now has many models, the difference of the characters cannot be recognized clearly.
Clio for luxury cars.
Verno for sporty cars
Primo for small cars
At present HONDA sells their cars as follows.
Note that Saber and Inspire are same as I described and Accord and Torneo are same also.

They have Type S in Japan alright...
As for lack of D4... I guess I can answer that(well, my best guess any way).... "4" in Chinese pronounce very close to the word "Death", and therefore eliminated to suit the culture better.....
If you ever ride an elevator in Asia, you would notice there is no 4th floor...

Andy,
You are funny
Well, it is true that the number "4" is not a good number. Let's say number "13" in western countries.
However we have 4th floor in buildings.
And my previous HONDA Ascot Innova did have the shift positions such as P, R, N, D4, D3, 2 and 1 as it had 4 speed automatic.
But Andy is right.
In very old buildings sometimes there is no 4th floor and in some hotels the room numbers are for example, 501, 502, 503 and 505. No 504.

In Chinese related countries I know that "8" is the greatest number.
Therefore I heard that the license plate with the number of "8888" there can be sold with a very high price.

I have hread that the highest price they went for is about US $20000 for a very special tag... I think it was 8888... I am sure the whole detail but damn... that's a lot for just a tag... That was few years ago, when the economy was doing well, and they don't have personalized plate there back then, not sure about, now.
even cellphone numbers can be auctioned for a price.
The highest it went was about US $30000, that was around last year. The number was 091-234-5678.

I might be wrong but didnt you say you bought the Saber with the 2.5 liter engine? if so then I think your D is actually D4 which means you have the 4-speed transmission... if you had the Type-S with the 3.2 liter engine then you would have D5... I could be wrong though... whatever happened with the cruise control situation?

At the same timing, HONDA introduced Type-S but I know that Type-S for Japan has the same shift positions as 2.5 has.
Engine of Type-S is same as the one in your country.
whatever happened with the cruise control situation?
Now I am enjoying driving using SS on highways instead of cruising steadily
