Shaving Rim

What does it mean to shave the rim? Do they shave it from the back or front?

Thanks,

Hey Tatewaki,
Thanks for your reply. Do you think it is ok to shave the rim or is there some adverse side effects?

Shaving rims is a It can affect the structure of the rim. Not safe at all. I assume you have a fitment issue? I suggest you sell your wheels and buy correct ones. I would never recommend shaving rims. What are you running, by the way?

I really want the Ace Sigma but it only comes in 18x8.5 with a 45 offset. The guy at wheelmax said they can shave the rim for 25 bucks each. So I wanted your guys' input on this. Thanks again.

Shaving the wheel hub to increase offset takes material away from the hub, compromising its strength. I guess you may also have to shorten the bolts so that the closed lugs will still fit. Best to find a wheel that will fit better from the start.

18x8 +45 will fit as long as you go with 225 width tires.

I'd rather roll fender lip than shave wheels. Although if it's only a couple of mm and the wheel shop doing it will replace it if it breaks then go for it.

If YOU are taking the responsibility for it then skip or live with the narrower tire (you'll also have to shave your bumper tab)

I can't believe a company would put themselves at risk like that by purposely cutting a rim hub down so it fits the car better? Structural integrity is an issue. I am with the others, find a rim that properly fits, shaving rims can't be good, especially down the road. Then, if you have to trim your lug nut bolts, what happens if you have to put on your stock rim in case of a flat?

for an 8.5" wide rim to fit the 2nd gen, you will need at least a +55mm offset! this means removing almost 10mm of material and would definitely compromise the lugnut seating area. and if not done right, you might end up with a wobbly wheel as it will not spin true. but the choice is yours.

I shaved 2mm off the hub of my rims with no problem at all. I have access to a full machine shop so ot was no big deal. I would not go any higher that 3 mm though. This helps 245s tuck under the lips with a drop on a 8" wheel with a +45 off set (+47 with the shave)

most rims can handle a small amount of material off. but like the others said, i wouldnt do much. it all depends on the rim and how much they left on during the original machining.
