Service Question - Need your advice!?

Okay, so I had my first service appointment today with a “Precision Team” service department. I basically brought it in for a few due-bill issues remaining from the purchase (paint care & leather care packages). But I figured while I was there, I would have them look into a slight “hum” I’m noticing during driving, as well as I’ve noticed the engine knocking on 1 or 2 occasions.

Well, I came back later to pick up the car and everything looked great. They had given her a nice bath and take care of the protection packages. The couldn’t replicate the hum or knocking (figures), but since it was almost closing time, I figured I could do a test drive with a consultant another time.

But when I started driving home, I realized that they had driven about 22 miles during their “road tests”!!! I need some help in ascertaining whether or not that is excessive. I immediately called back and had the guy explain why so many miles. He told me some BS story about how they’re “sticklers” to find the cause of problems (which they didn’t succeed in), and that each issue required a road test.

I’m just really pissed, as I think it’s unjustified to put that many miles on the car. While I respect they’re probably a professional group – I don’t trust the manner in which they probably drove the car. I certainly didn’t want a couple of techs having a little joy ride in my car!

So, am I off-base? I know there are a couple of Acura Service guys on the board – could you please also let me know your thoughts? I plan on calling the Service Manager back on Monday, but I’m just curious what everyone thinks…

Thanks and sorry for the long post!

I for one think that is not excessive, perhaps on the hi side, but their explanation is entirely plausible. Lighten up man.

If you are determined to make a Federal case, use the Federal milage alloowance - 34.5 cents/mile as I recall. $7.

And if you plan to keep your car, you want to build a decent reloationship with these guys - I always leave cigarettes or some token early o with the service guys - and have always been treated well and gotten little bennies free.

Maybe it was that NSX I bought...?

Thanks for the reply, but who said anything about a Federal case?!? I simply asked for some input if folks thought it was excessive - no where did I mention that I wanted my mileage reimbursed.

Believe me, I certainly value and respect the value of any relationship you have with a provider of service. Some people just don't understand how far that goes - but I do.

It just seemed like a lot to diagnose two small problems - I don't understand why they had to drive it that far.

22 miles is a little bit on the high side, but it isn't really uncommon. Even when you go buy a brand new car at acura that has never been test droven by consumers yet they usually put almost 20 miles (at my dealer atleast) on the cars doing test runs making sure everything is ok.
