Today I let a friend take a test drive in my car. He was going faster than the speed limit. Suddenly my radar detector went off and read laser. Then we saw the 2 motorcyle cops, one on each side of the road. We were behind a silver Dodge ram on a 2 lane road. The dodge ram started to slow down and pulled over, so my friend switched to the left lane and kept going. The cop on the left side of the road yelled at him to stop, so he turned into the turn lane. I thought he was going to stop, but he went on and made the left turn. My other friend in the car looked back and said that he saw the motorcycle cop strapping on his helmet and walking toward his motorbike. But he never followed us. We finally made it home and there was no sign of the police. We then went in another friends car and went back to the street and the 2 cops were there. They looked like they never left. So am I safe??? Should I look forward to seeing a ticket in the mail or something??? This is my first time in a situation like this and I wasn't even the one driving. Please help me out with some answers guys. I'm really nervous about this.

If it wasn't a photo-radar system, I'd say you have nothing to worry about. There is no evidence that you were there. If you receice a ticket, you have a good chance of winning if you fight it.

I'm a law enforcement officer and unless we pursue you with lights and siren, you were not in the wrong. If for any reason they do contact you about it, just say you did not hear the verbal command and you were not aware of any wrong doing.

Hey MikeS, so they have to have lights and siren? I dunno..

I've been flagged over twice for being in the carpool lane on the freeway. Damn state patrol (no offense Mike )... they stepped out in front of me and made me pull over. Got out of one but got stuck with the other.

Also, whats the deal with bike cops? Some lady yelled at my friend and he pulled over not realizing she was a cop. Forget what he was doing to get the ticket though.

I'd never let THAT friend drive my car again. I think you'll be ok, but they may watch for your car again if its in your own neighborhood, so you might want to take it easy, in case they pull you next time.

 

The reason I let him drive my car was because he let me drive his(2000 Volkswagen Jetta 5 speed). He got scared I guess when the officer yelled at him so he just left like he didn't even notice the officer. I was really stunned by his course of actions. I really didn't know what to say. I seriously thought there was going to be a chase or something. Thanks for the info guys. It sure took a load off of my mind.

We can step out and signal you over, but if you don't see us and we do not pursue you it would be hard pressed in court for the police to fight that. That's why you can plead no contest, not saying I'm not guilty, but was unaware. It's a good idea not to run for the police. You might make us miss a donut break! Seriously though he should not worry, there was another car. If he really wanted you, he would have pursued you.
