Question Rust - Canadian Winters

Will our cars rust faster if parked in a heated garage at the end of each day?

Just wondering

I read once that a heated garage is actually worse for a salt covered car than being outside. It needs to be above freezing for corrosion to take place.

At least that's what I remember reading.

I have to agree with GoHawks63 said --

If I remember correctly from my physical chemistry days of undergrad ... for metal to rust (aka oxidize) -- that's a function of temperature. So ... if you have a situation where you've saturated a metal surface with a brine solution (ie salt from roads) -- then you WANT to keep the metal as cold as possible to slow the oxidation from occurring.

If you don't have the block heater or don't like having to clean your car off (esp in Ottawa area), then the best compromise would be to wash it every once in a while. (You can check the previous treads on how to do that) I go to a soft cloth place near my house if I can't wash it on the street in the winter time (that's only if it hits +5 C)

Hope that helps.

Well, I don't know of any chemical reactions that don't work faster at higher temps..

RUST

If you want your car to last in our Canadian climate you need to keep the car clean. If you drive in the winter on wet salty roads, you should not park your car in the garage overnight without washing it 1st. Of course washing it and leaving it outside is also bad if you do not completely dry the vehicle. Auto carwashes are O.K., but do not dry the vehicle completely.
If you do store your car in the garage it is best not to have it heated. Moisture and oxidation work best at elevated temps. Mud is also bad as it holds moisture.
A friend of mine had his garage modified with a drain in the middle of the cement floor so he could wash his car in the garage.
He has heaters in the garage and would turn them on for an hour or so after he got home if he was going to wash the car in the winter(bad salt day). He would wash the car completely, including the underside and then dry. He would then leave the garage warm enough to evaporate any residual moisture under the car(2-3 hours) and then turn off the heat and leave at ambient temp.

Bottom Line: Salt is a killer. If you cherish your car, wash it completely and often if you must drive it in the winter. Otherwise park it and pray for SPRING!!!

Yup.. heated garages can/will accelarate corrosion.
I remember I would park my old Firebird in my building garage, and the brake pads would corrode to the disks in less than 24hrs...
..either keep it cleen or keep it COLD....

It may rust in the garage, but it impossible to clean your car every day, and the reason I use my garage is two-fold, including I hate scraping in the morning and to ward off any vandalism.
