Running the engine with the EGR valve removed

Hi All :

After a thorough cleaning and a good coat hanger poking, I'm still getting 1491 codes (see my other thread with all the gory details). I was wondering if I removed the EGR valve and started the engine, would it blast any hidden debris out of the now empty ERG valve port ? I wouldn't do it for a long, maybe five minutes max, but I'm concerned that I might get flames shooting out of the port and burn wiring etc.

I'd like to try this as a last option before I buy a new EGR valve. Has anyone ever done this either on purpose or by mistake ?

not something I ever tried...
on the race car~ we would put a blanking plate over the egr valve port~

but for you- have you tested the valve with vacuum pump- see if its opening and closing on demand?

iirc you did spray wd on it?

Hi 01 :

No, I'm a DIY'er with some tools but no access to a fully equiped shop with a vacume pump or a compressor.

I don't believe the valve opens and closes. I think it maintains a constant pressure or flow of exhaust gas to the intake manifold. I think the error code is generated when a sensor in ther EGR value detects low or no pressure coming in, which would make sense if (when) the port is blocked.

I don't believe mine is blocked, but I have no way of knowing for sure. The only choice I seem to have is to buy a new valve and see if the error returns. If it does, I'm out $200 bucks !

Running it with the EGR off wont do anything unless the heads themselves are clogged, which i doubt. The Clogs usually occur in the EGR valve and the intake. Its very possible that your EGR is bad. Did you take the intake off to clean it?

Also have you checked your local parts stores? Ours has the EGR for 81 bucks.

I bought a new gasket for my egr valve and going to clean it today.
I didn't have time yesterday to do it so last night I unpluged my egr for the hell of it to see if anything would change.
No changes at all, light throttle, full throttle, idle,no cel,no anything.
It actually seamed to run a little better but ,that couldve been because the sun went down and it was a little cooler out.

Should I see any change unpluging it ?

Yes, I have taken it off and cleaned as much as I could without actually disassembling the part. I opened the valve and squirted carb cleaner and WD40 down it and made sure the ports were clear.

The best I can do up here is the dealer (believe it or not !!) at $180+tax or at a parts chain for $213+tax.

I do have a legal conduit to get parts from the U.S. but only in the winter time and so I'll wait until then. Where did you see $81 ?

P.S. The Hawks really pulled it off last night ! Congratulations !

you dont need a big machine to test the egr valve
its vacuum operated on- off..and it closes at idle and full throttle as car would run bad at those times

hook a hand operated vac pump (vac brake bleeder tool) and see if it works
spend 20 bucks on the tool if you have too- beats 200
You tried wd on it already??

Open during average running rpm so its pumping some exhaust gas back into the system for reburning

Ours are electronically controlled. I dont know where you would put vacuum to it
