What patc said, if you run with the light empty, there is a chance you can get air into the system and burn out the fuel pump. I always top off the tank once I get to down to a 1/4 tank left to be sure. (Also a habit here in the Northeast, last thing you want is to run out of gas in a snowstorm!)

Yea, I always make sure that I fill it up when I know that is almost empty. I never wait until the light comes on. Why would you want to drive your car until there is no gas?? Especially it is a brand new over $30K ride.

When we did this topic on the TL most of us said the light comes on with about 2gals.
Someone also posted they ran 90 miles after the light came on. The mileage range for a 2001 TL is 327 City/499 Highway. When you compare it with a 2001 Accord EX V6 that gets 342 City /479 Highway keep this baby on the road.

With prices so high for premium gas now, I just thought I would mention it.
So, if I top off in the early morning, I would then have an overfill by the afternoon since I have an extra gallon of expanded gas? Just a thought! hehe....

For all Honda and Acuras (the real ones) the gas warning light comes on when there is about 10 liters or 2.6 US Gallons or 2.2 Imperial Gallons left in the tank. If it comes on and goes off, that does not count. When it is first consistently on, then you can start the countdown. For the TL, CL etc, you probably have about 50 more miles before you get stranded.

The only exception to the above is the Odyssey that has it's gas light come on at about 15 liters left.

That's true...actually, you probably will get like a cup extra if you fill it up early in the morning. But by the time the afternoon comes, you probably usede up that much already. Used to be, the racers chill the gas w/ dry ice to fit more into tanks, but they don't allow that anymore because it was too dangerous...I heard...

This is true. I fly general aviation aircraft at a local flying club. If you fill up the tanks before the sun rises, you'll have a steady dripping stream of gasoline by the time it gets warm (comes out of the gas tank vent).

In addition to what PATC said, the tank would not overfill by afternoon even if you don't use up any of it up because I think the gas pump shuts off with still some room left in the gas tank (since i have seen some people manually squeeze in up to a dollar or two of gas after the automatic shutoff).

I have had the fuel light on once. I actually ran another 20 miles after the light came on and when I filled it up, it took 13-14 gallons.
