Rotors

Im sick of getting my rotors resurfaced every 6-9 months. Just got them done again and hoping for a soloution out of this. Cost me 5 bucks each so not that bad but just SO DAMN OFTEN . Which is the best one to go for? Slotted, drilled, plain? Brands? does it even matter which brand it is cus seems like a crap load of metal melted together. Hope i can figure it out. It should look nic with the rims also calipers, already painted red? Price? thanks.

jeez harmz!~ what are you running for rotors and pads- how do you even get them resurfaced more than once?
You know the main performance brands run about 350 for rotors and pads
good pads run 85
I like my RacingBrake rotors and pads from MrHeelToe-
http://heeltoeauto.com/COMBO-SPECIALS-c-1804.html
I think this months secret discount code is: acurazinerocks
Others are using RB pads on other rotors- or OE brembo pads on RB rotors-6speed cars

Rotora is another popular option and makes its own pads

Sodaluvr found some other brand locally at 85 per rotor that he is trying on a toyota or something with good results
NAPA has some good stuff

PM me and bring it over- we can slap those things on fast~ I keep a mini toolbox with everything for a TL brake job, just for the ziner in need!

Red calipers- I dont know about that..... much harder to find the right brakes for you~
I like my stealthy black, with my color combo and rims

Hows your calipers operation and pad wear? Is something else actually causing the problem?
When is this last date of brake fluid change, more than a year, more than you know? never?

5 dollar surfacing- wow- I wonder if they even measure how much from each side was removed, and what the remaining thickness was- how far above minimum it was.

The metals used, and how they were treated- heat treated at the factory is the differance between cheap and quality
How you drive affects the system life

If you're looking for a street performance upgrade, here's what I put on my '02 TL-S about a month ago:

- Racing Brake 1-Peice Slotted Front Rotors
- StopTech Slotted OE Replacment Rear Rotors
- ET500 Pads all around
- RB SS Brake Lines

Got it all from Marcus at Mr HeelToe (heeltoeauto.com).

Great!! set up so far.

Ive had them resurfaced about 5 times i belive. I have oem pads. Taking off my tires isnt a problem becuase i love using my compressor and impact gun . Never had a brake fluid change, been wanting to do it but dont know if i will be able to bleed them right. I wanted to get some slotted rotors so they look nice since my rims are five star and you see alot of the rotors. Is slotted a good way or bad way? I dont wanna risk messing up my car to save a few bucks so i think i should just change them.

ok the impact gun is the first problem- are you setting the torque on the lugs at 80 foot pounds?
Slotted look good and offer performance benefit to hardcore drivers
crossdrilled are not needed

What brand rotors are you on- I have got to see these things- machined 5 times? are you chasing down a mystery shake or what

I use the impact gun and then retorque them by hand. Im on oem rotors. Never changed them. I always know i need to resurface them when the car starts shaking when im hitting the brakes after drivign around for a bit. Afterwards they are SMOOTH.

I think we should hook you up with RacingBrake 1 piece slotted rotors and ET500 pads
It will stop fast but quiet, and last and last IMO
Lets throw Legend calipers on it too!!!!

Main thing is to get rid of the OE rotors and their well known tendancy to warp
Just about anything is going to be better

I'm on RB 1-piece with ET500 pads in the front and StopTech in the rear - just to match. Stops smoooooooth as butter and very quickly. Can't really imagine a better set-up than this.

check the build your own brake combo at heeltoe for several options and pricing
There is a discount code if you are ready to order-acurazinerocks- put that in th ecouipon box to see adjusted price
roughly 350 for good fronts= pads and rotors that work and last long time~
and a great read about brakes and how they differ
http://heeltoeauto.com/COMBO-SPECIALS-c-1804.html
http://heeltoeauto.com/httech/YaBB.pl?board=tech_brakes
also see Off Topic -Sponsored Sales threads for other brands and vendors, like excelerate

There is always napa for good quality basic brakes locally- you dont need the killer stuff... unless you like to go to reno and yosemite as fun runs~
I really am interested in measuring your rotor thickness- it cant be above MIN thickness still!

the slotted rears are mostly for show- and since you have rims and painted calipers- we can safely go with - you want slotted rears-
The StopTechs are a visual match for slot direction as the front RBs. Get the whole package-and use the RB pads- ET500s for your driving style
May as well go to SS brake lines and the legend calipers- do a search of azine for threads on part numbers and brand choices.
I left my cheapie rotors on the rear and you can see the wear differance to the RB, looks like I need to finalize the last thing to possibly upgrade or replace on my 01s brakes now, and get match rear rotors!

ROTORA rotors are a great OE replacement rotors that are far less prone to warpage than the OE rotors.

I have been trying to replace my 03 TL-S brake system...would it be necessary to replace the calipers...along with rotors and pads...i want to paint the calipers black but if it was possible to buy a new set in black that would look better and work better i might want to do that....whats your thoughts on that? and how much did your setup cost?

About 7,000 miles / 4 months or so. I'll probably swap to legend calipers in a few months. How do you like the SS lines? How was the install on those?

SS lines rock- they dont swell under pressure- watch the lines when you pump the brakes to bleed them and see what I mean,
That results in steady pedal pressure through the fun run without faded pedal as heat builds.
Several good brands to choose from

Install is easy IF you know Tom's secret tricks to remove the retainer clips in the center of the line- where the new line meets the cars metal line-
techniques also known by many others, but I can live in my own little world if I want to~

The rest is unbolt and rebolt- bleed brakes- test drive- do 2, 45 mph to stopped test of ABS to clear any bubbles trapped in there, bleed brakes again
Done

Tom, Im looking to upgrade my brakes soon. The rotors are shaking my car badly at highway speeds! Sodaluvr has some lifetime warranty rotors for me to try out so that should eliminate the warped rotor problems. Whats a good place for cheap SS lines? and what other pads are best bang for the buck? I just do normal city driving, no auto X and want something low dust and lasts. Noise isnt too much of a concern for me.

Great set up. ~$650, self installed. WAY cheaper than Acura OE Parts and Dealer install. Better performance too.

Legend Calipers (reman'd) units are an option. I don't have 'em but others rave about them.

There is a DIY on painting the calipers black - I did mine the day I changed the rotors and pads.

~2 months and 1500 miles here. So far so good. Love the SS lines. Have them on the this car and the 3G TL-S. Like Tom said, better pedal feel - firmer and very linear. And no more "pedal fade" from hot fluid/lines.

EASY install. I put up a step-by-step DIY with pics for the 3G. 2G is pretty much (maybe 100%) exactly the same. Link here:

Hey man, good move.

We've *all* got to set priorities and when you're younger/getting started, $$ can be tough to come by.

Keep an eye on those rotors though. Resurfacing that often isn't good. You'll get below minimum thickness quick plus each time you take metal off makes them more prone to warpage.

Maybe look at a relatively inexpensive (but good brand) of OE replacement rotors in the short run - NAPA, etc. - instead of resurfacing next time.

Its only on hold for about a month or two max. I just wanna get started up in school and then spend money on my car once books are paid for They will leave a HUGE dent in my pocket.
