i have a 99Tl almost 2 42k brakes are starting 2 b warped
just a little, not alot.

on another note, WHY DONT U PPL USE THE LEFT PEDAL TO BRAKE. NOT THE TRANNY (THE RIgHT FOOT) to brake. dont take outthe tranny because of brakes.

just shift down then brake. so easy

I have a 2001 TL with 28000 on it. Very mild rotor pulsation
has developed in the last 5000 miles. I do not drive hard.
Mostly highway.

I would be interested in a replacement rather than resurfacing.
Is there an upgrade/replacement known?

What really irks me is what Acura did to the 2004 TL 5AT. The same ****box 5AT and the same flimsy brakes on the 5AT model. The 6MT gets what -- Brembo (front only) calipers and larger no-name rotors (front only) made in some sweatshop in Bangladesh? Talk about your corner-cutting, budget-saving, sticker-boosting gyps!

My TL type S is a 2002. Had the rotors resurfaced at 19K and they need it again at 27K. Chronic issue.

'03 Type S with 12,000 miles. Pulsations in brakes when descending mountain passes at highway speed and higher. Strange but I haven't noticed it in normal, flat highway driving.

Thumbs up

2003 tl-s 19k miles front rotors warped. I took it to Cerritos Acura (southern CA)and they fixed it no charge. They said there was a TSB to change to a different pad...We'll see if it holds up.

BTW - The service rep was great! I got a new TSX as a loaner car and was in and out (once to drop off and once to pick it up) in just a few minutes.

WOW! this experience wasn't like the ones I had at the GM Dealer...and I had plenty!

i have the same problem with my 99 TL. i've had several re-balancings and re-alignments done since the wobbly effect and shimmy coincided with my tire replacements. i know the jerks @ my dealership won't help. what exactly is a TSB??

thanks. i did a search for it and also called acura. was wondering, is paying for the tsb the only way to actually view it? cos it appears it's for sale @ alldata.com and acura does not actually release such info unless the client services people r contacted directly. i just wanna have something on me when i go to the dealers.

I have a 2002 TL-S with 18,000 miles. I started feeling the pulsating at around 17,000, but I didn't get around to addressing the problem until I had tranny problems too. The dealer took care of the tranny, but he said the rotors are only warrantied for 12,000 miles. Guess I'm SOL in that department.

Your dealer is full of it. Some here have had warranty rotor replacement well after 12000.
They know these rotors are bogus. Press the issue.:argue:

Hello everyone, I am new to these boards and have a 99 TL. I have about 60K miles on it and have luckily up until now had no problems with anything, be it the transmission or brakes. How long should the brake pads last? I know some cars burn through them quickly, but my TL seems to be fine. What should I be looking out for as far as if the rotors are warped or the pads are running down?

Yup,
Had ours done at around 30k on warranty (I insisted)...
They are warped again.....
I guess I owe my wife an apology.... I told her it was
the way she drove....After finding this forum... I guess it was just poor quality......

I'm new to the board, but I have had my TL-S for almost 2 years. I had to have my roters replaced once @ about 24,000 miles. They were warped but the dealership that I took my car to did take care of it...but I'm down to help the cause anyways...

2002 TL-S; 39,000 miles; 1 resurface (not sure if they did all 4 or just the front ones, but prolly just the front ones)

On another note...I don't know if you saw this regarding the quality of service that Honda/Acura provides (mostly pertaining to the tranny prollem), but somebody else posted it in another thread, so I thought I'd post it here as well just in case.

Today I took my 2002 TL-S in for the Timing Belt recall.

My car has 30,000 miles, and I just bought it at ~28,000 from Carmax. I had a bit of a shimmy when I bought it, so Carmax turned the rotors. They were starting to shimmy again, already, after just 2000 miles.

I asked my Service Advisor today if he know of any problems with rotors/brakes on the TL's, and he said no. I then pressed the issue in regards to the Service Bulletin I had read about here, and he did a quick check with another guy, and confirmed there was indeed a service bulletin. Once they drove the car and confirmed the behavior, they took care of it.

Moral of story: Today FOR FREE I got a new Timing Belt Auto-Tensioner, Timing Belt, Water Pump (from the recall), and FOUR NEW ROTORS AND ALL NEW PADS. Had it not been for this site, I would have been out a fortune for new rotors and pads (though I would have bought aftermarkets, not from dealer).

So press for the Service Bulletin if you are still having problems - unfortunately I don't know the bulletin number to reference, but just knowing it is available should help you sell your case to the dealer.

What are the signs of having warped rotors? I have 26,xxx on my 02 TL right now and lately I've noticed the car does not ride smoothly anymore, especially when braking. It is very shaky and jerks alot. Can this be caused by having warped rotors or does it sound like I may be encountering a tranny failure? Thanks in advance.

I bought my TL used - certified and they turned my rotors no charge in the 1 year warranty certified gives you.
Tire rack has Brembo rotors for $50 each - OEM Acura are about $250 - worth the effort to try the Brembo and see if they hold up.
Perhaps someone is overtightening your lug nuts during tire rotation???

This is a little different. I got an '03 CL Navi, had it for about 10k miles, rotors were resurfaced by dealer, now with 13k they feel like i have to go to the dealer in a week or so.

i got my car used, certified, with extended 7yr warranty last june. having the same problems now. here's what acura told me:

resurface front rotor + replace brake pads + lubricate calipers @ $285
resurface rear rotors + replace brake pads + replace calipers @ $297
my rear calipers are sticky but those are under warranty, hence the overall price.

i'm thinking of simply doin the caliper work @ acura and taking my car elsewhere. anyone done the brake thing elsewhere? what did u use? how do they feel?

Where is the TSB ? I tried looking for it but could not find it. I already paid ~525 for new rotors and brakes today on 47K 2001 TL so i guess i will not be getting any refund. But if it happens again in a few '000 miles I can use it.

They said they now needed to be replaced and it would cost about $400. I *****ed and complained and they charged me only for the rotors, not labor.

Well, Idaten7411...I have had 2 TL's. First a 2001 TL, then 6 months later, traded for a 2002 TLS. I have had a few problems with the cheap paint, but otherwise the car's have been perfect. No brake problems, no tranny problems, no rattles, nothing! Maybe I am lucky, but I think some people who buy these cars think they own a race car, and drive it accordingly. My car is treated with respect, driven fast, and cared for properly, but I don't race it, or try and impress some teenager at every stoplight. When I read some of the posts on this forum, it is no wonder that people are having trouble with their cars. This car is meant to be driven, not raced. I know I'm gonna get flamed for this post, but I've just gotten so fed up reading about all the 20somethings complaining about Acura's and how crappy they are. DUHHH??...maybe it's the way these guys drive????? Go buy a race car if you want to race.

Well I would be one of those guys who generally drives the car harder then most people. And as a result I do have a few problems with the car, but most of my posts are too inquire about the problem, not to diss Acura's quality. I bought this car for one reason, because I enjoy driving a nice, fast, comfortable sedan. Therefore I have no regrets about my purchase.

I think that in the 500 or so posts that I have, not once have I ever bad mouthed the car persay. Possibly the level of service some of the dealers (North Toronto Acura), has provided, but never with the overall quality of the car.

I love my A-Spec.

Well, having driven (and at times, raced) quite a few cars since 1966 I would like to say that your observations are interesting. And having 'only driven' my '02 Acura TL for about two years and having to have rotors replaced twice I would have to say you are indeed lucky.

Great, economical solution to the acura (and honda) disc problem. I put a new set of these drilled rotors up front- so far after 5000 miles, no problems. Customer service is great-received the rotors in a couple of days after ordering.

2002 3.2TL Type S
Front Rotors re-surfaced at about 21K. Dealership said it was just a one time free of charge because of my complaining.

Front brake lining changed and roters re-surfaced at 45K. Had about 30% of brake lining, but rotors were warped.

Beginning to feel the front brakes pulsating now at 67K. Planning to go back to get a brake job again soon.

This is only one of the few things I hate about the TL.

I have an Acura 3.2TLS purchased in April 2003 with 45,500 KM (Canada eh). Had the rotors machined at 48000 KM. That didn't work so dealer replaced the front rotors almost immediately. Now at 55,000 KM the rotors are exhibiting the same problem. Dealer looking into it and will call me tomorrow.

I have a 1992 Toyota Camry and had the rotors replaced in July 2003 for the first time at 285,000 Kilometers. Thats about 180,000 miles.

I have a 2003 TL-P with 10,000 miles on it. I am beginning to feel the effects of warped rotors. I get a pulse in the brakes when slowing from highway speeds. I have not contacted dealer yet. I am not hard on the brakes.

67k miles. Rotors warped at 40k and again at 60k. I ended up buying brembo rotors and currently have 3k on them and they are fine.

I'm pretty picky about my brakes. Slowing down from high speeds 70mph+ and getting the front wheel shimmy is just dangerous. So I've had my rotors turned when the rotors showed just a little bit of warping and brake shake. Had it done twice - around 8K and 18K. Now at 33K miles and they have been just fine for awhile. Dealer says I'm still 35% remaining on the front pads too. So I haven't even changed pads yet.

After the second turn, I did some checking on causes of rotor warping. Rapid heat changes was one cause (high speed driving and then getting the rotor wet in a puddle is pretty bad). But another issue can cause rotors to warp - uneven torque of the lug nuts. Since my 18K service, I've been very careful to retorque, by hand, each lug in proper sequence after the wheel has been removed for balancing, rotating, etc. I think this has worked well for me, since my rotors have been fine since then. Most of the air tools don't torque evenly and a lot of the tire service guys are interested in speed not precision. If your having lots of rotor problems, I'd invest in a torque wrench and check your nuts. It can't hurt.

I had my first rotor warp at 18K and the dealer resurface for free of charge.
I had second rotor warp at 42k and the dealer resurfaced all front and rear rotors and replaced both front and rear brake pads for free..

I had a problem with front wheel bearing at 36k and the dealer repalced it for free.

So far I am happy with Acura of Boston.
