Resonator Removal?

I am getting the Apexi WS exhaust system but I was disappointed to know that this exhaust system happens to be a VERY quiet one. Personally I like my exhaust to sound fierce and mean, I don't want my new exhaust to sound like stock. Is it a good idea to remove the resonator? Will it affect anything?

There's two resonator, how much louder depends on which one you remove.

I removed the bigger of the 2 exhaust resonator. I removed the stock air box and replaced it with a short air ram. I noticed that it hums louder. The droan and roar comes in only after you hit vtec or >4800 rmp. For me I like that. I dont sound like a rice boy during normal commute but I do when I floored it. btw I have stock muffler. chk my sig.

Quick interjection.

I had the apexi ws on my civic. It's the same basic design. At low RPM's it sounds stock there is no real differance until you hit a higher RPM. IMO i think the Apexi WS is an awesome product looks really nice too.

So you guys would agree with me that I should definately take the resonator off the Apexi WS if I want some sound at lower RPMs right? Which resonator should I take off? Can I do it myself or better at the shop? What are the steps to take the resonator off?

This might be a stupid question... but is the resonator the same as the silencer?

I'm going to play the devil's advocate here as these 'myths' have got to stop. How much power do some think is really being gained?? In addition, how much pressure drop do you really think occurs through the resonator??

If you are doing it for the sound, more power to ya. But if you think you are gaining and feel more power; that is just wishful thinking.

At most you might have about 1 - 2 inHg pressure drop through the resonator, if that. And this would be at the higher flow rates of 400 CFM which no TL or CL reaches without forced induction. 1 - 2 inHg drop equates to about 1 HP gained.

For those who think they feel something; it is just optimism. It takes a minimum of about 5% increase to begin to feel a difference. On a stock TL-S motor that is about 10WHP. So what is being felt with the resonator removal is the sensation that the additional sound gives; nothing more.

scalbert,

I don't really care about the power increase... I am mostly thinking that I want it to sound good. NOT like stock, but NOT too loud either... don't want the cops chasing my ass all the time.

What would you recommend me to do to obtain a louder but not TOO loud sound from my exhaust?

As I said, if it is sound then removing them would be a good start. But since I see in your signature that you already have an aftermarket exhaust system; doesn't it already sound unlike stock??

Well that is what I assumed at the beginning when I got the exhaust (exhaust on the way, already ordered and all, but not installed), but after some research I learned that for some reason the Apexi WS exhaust system is NOT loud... it is actually quiet at low RPMs and a bit different than stock at high RPMs. Some ppl get this exhaust because of that, personally, I like my exhaust to always have a mean and a bit loud (louder than stock). It's very interesting though how this aftermarket exhaust it quiet...

OMG, scalbert. I know you are building manifolds, creating an IC, blah, blah blah...But analyzing the sound level of your exhaust? You are way to smart about this stuff for your own good. If you were a cat, you'd have been dead long ago...

I didn't initiate that sound analysis but got the results.

A couple of years ago I was finishing up a catalytic converter life cycle test stand for Calsonic, an OEM automotive supplier.

Calsonic Exhaust Website

This test stand was built to heat cycle a catalytic converter for a couple of weeks. When I say heat cycle, it was serious. Ramp up to 800 C within a minute, hold for 4 minutes, ramp down to 100 C within a minute and hold for 4 minutes, then repeat the whole cycle. This was with about 150 CFM through the unit the whole time. It was fun cooking catalytic converters. Some were heated to far and completely blocked within minutes.

Anyway, while I was programming the system one of the engineers asked if that was my Acura outside. I replied yes and he asked if they could use it for a sound test. So they put on the gear and strapped it down to their outside dyno and ran the tests. The kicker is this, they had been asked by Nissan to get the sound data off a CL Type-S as they wanted to tune the upcoming Maxima to sound similar.

Hey r10apple,

Can you please post some pictures of your "Type-S side emblems" for me? I just bought 2 "Type-S" emblems on this website to put them on the side of my car too! I want to know exactly where you positioned them to see if it looks cool or not.

I'm gonna drive to Altanta and take you out somewhere soon. it'll be okay. Really. Just hold on a bit longer...

<just kidding>
Sounds like interesting stuff, but way over my head.

Though unrelated, here you go thsiao:

Hey r10apple,

How come your "Type-S" emblem looks smaller than the one that appears on the back of stock cars? Or is it just me?

I was thinking I wanted to put mine around that same area, but above the horizontal line before the door crack. Not so high like yours. What you think?

Don't copy me!
Just kidding...

I just kinda put them where I've seen sidemarkers and other emblems on cars. No true rhyme or reason...
