the exhaust resonator or the intake resonator?

The intake resonator is a group of pipes and chambers(sort of speak) which is attached to the bottom of the airfilter box. You simply remove this and wind up with the bottom of the air filter box to freely suck air instead of through the resonator. No need for extra pipes.

so then what's the point of having a resonator in your car in the 1st place?

To reduce intake noise.

The noise isn't bad at all during normal "around the town" driving, a matter of fact I don't think it's all that different really.
But it's just got a bit more "Roar" when it's in the upper revs using VTEC for sure. But........

.....the noise that annoys me is the humming drone heard when the car is idling.

No problems after ity's removal. Save your self a couple of bills and remove the resonator and put in a HiPo filter instead of a getting a CAI.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the hiss when the engine is shut off too.
