Post Residual Value of TL-S w/ Navi

I was talking to an Acura sales representative and he said that cars with a navigation system after a lease is only 62% of the original value as opposed to 64% of the original value without the navigation system. Does anyone know if this is true. He also said that the cost of the system to the dealership is $1836. Does anyone have info on this?

How long is the lease is he talking about? The DVD cost, is around $1800. This is the invoice difference between the nav. and non-nav. model. The cost is not to the dealership, is to Acura. Since Acura is the one that put the Nav. system in. So, your sales man is right and wrong.

This is in relation to a 36 month lease, and it was almost as if the sales representative was convincing me not to buy the navigation system (though i want it)

I was considering a lease before I bought and ran the lease numbers with my sales gy a couple fo times. He said that residual on a non-navi was higher 64% than a Navi 62% because the " public's perception" is that the non-Navis will have a higher resale value.

Perhaps its a conspiracy, who the hell knows.

Do yourself a favor and just buy her. Its such a wonderful car that you'll be keeping her for many years to come. Long timers buy, short timers lease. Buying is better in the long run anyway.

my 2 cents

U know what i never said anything but my salesman insisted that i don't take the nav and spent a lot of time telling me that it wasn't worth it, he said "u'll use for a few days and then forget about it". I found this strange because i would think that the salesman would try to sell u the most he can. I got it anyways because the only WDP they had was with nav, and i'm glad i did. Thats what impresses people most about my ride

I guess it then depends on if you're getting the navigation system to use or to impress people. It isn't worth two grand to me to impress people.

There was the same discrepancy between the residual of the NAV and the non when I got mine. The salesman also said it was a gimicky option and although it could come in handy, so to would the $2K in my pocket Think of it like this, three or four years from now, how much would you pay for the nav. I guess their hunch is that it is not really on par with the rest of the car.

I'm with you, imax. I'm not buying this car to impress anyone but myself, and I know where I'm going 99% of the time. I'd rather spend the $2k on "go" not "show." But to each his own.

But on the topic, I can see how the Nav system itself might not retain as much residual value as does the car as a whole.

Using round figures, 64% of $32000 (non-Nav) is $20480 and 62% of $34000 (Nav) is $21080 -- a difference of $600. Whoever buys the Nav TL in 3-4 years will have to update the Nav DVD. How much does the DVD cost -- close to $600?? Maybe that's the difference in the residuals.

Chief, nice try, but your math is all wrong man. You are comparing percentages on different face values and then comparing what you got? Strange stuff. look at it like this. Plus the residual of the TLS/nav is still higher (in dollars). That $600 is what Acura thinks people will pay to have nav in a 3-year old TL-S three years from now. Think of it as a 30% residual on the nav system itself, while the rest of the car is still at 64%. Would you lease anything with a 30% residual????

Here's a different thought though: The navi has a very cool part to it -- a relatively large smudge-free LCD. There are people already fitting it with DVD players and such. A year or two down the road someone's going to come up with a wireless internet/voice responce/PIM synch/car diagnostics/trip statistics/whatever system that would work nicely with that screen... Or maybe I'm just dreaming

Me -- no nav, thank you very much. I already spent $500 on an iPaq Pocket PC. Another $200-$300 will buy me everything I need to turn that into a portable navigation system (so I'll need to download maps when I go to a different part of the country - big deal). Now let's count. $800 -- portable navi/gps, can do a whole lot more, take it with you when you go on business trips and rent cars, listen to MP3s, etc. $2000 - stationary in the car, can control AC.

Now don't get me wrong -- I like the navi in the TL. Really do. And the screen is VERY nice. I just can't justify the $2000.

But then again, that's just my opinion.

BUT, does the portable navi system have a pleasant female voice guiding you every step of the way!? I'm still waiting for an 'attitude' feature where you can change the mood of the voice. "You JUST MISSED THE F*@#@ing TURN JACKASS!"

I just ordered mt TLS originally w/o nav then changed to Nav because the difference on the lease was only $25/month diff. 59.5% residual w/nav 61 w/o for 42 months.

This is almost like buying a house, with or without a pool. The house with the pool will retain a bit less of the value in terms of percentage (even though in dollar terms, it is worth more than the non-pool house), since additional expenditure has gone into outfitting the house with the pool. But I predict that the person in the "house with the pool" will have a fantastic time throughout his stay there.
