Replacing TL Rear View Mirror

Rear View Mirror Loose
My Rear View Mirror recently became very loose and was jiggling around while driving. When I attempted to adjust it it just slid right off. Now I can not figure how to secure it again. All of the posted pictures do not show the back mount of the mirror itself so I am not sure if part of the bracket is missing. I am posting a picture of my mirror mount if someone could please tell me if it is broken or if I simply need to figure out how to put it on.
Thanks,
Jordan

But now, after over a year, the mirror has started to loosen up. Before I try to get it to click into place I want to be sure that there is a latching mechanism that will actually click.

Thank you for helping but I am still confused. The metal rails in the middle slide into the grooves in the knob on the windshield bracket. That highlighted part though is on the bottom of the mirror mount and doesn't seem to ever touch anything let alone latch to the bracket on the window. I can slide the mirror on from the bottom all the way up and off and it never latches on anything. The best I've been able to do is make it balance in place but it remains so loose that touching it will make it slide right off.

Kiran, what camera are you using? I've got Dom's unit but haven't gotten a camera yet. Let me know what you think of yours.

Oops, just realized Keith's post was from about a year ago. Oh well.
Kiran, the question I had still applies...any info on the back up camera would be helpful. How is it at night?

1999 RL Mirror Replacement
Hi Malayalee King
You're truely the KING. Because you saved me having to go to the Acura Dealership to replace my mirror. I simple followed the instructions in the pijctures you posted and I just finished installing my new Dimming mirror on my 1999 Acura RL. It took probably 15 minutes max. Thanks again Mr. King.

I had forgotten about this thread!
And as an update to my "loose mirror" problem, I was able to eliminate that. Maybe my solution will help someone else.
As background, I never could get the mirror to snap or lock into place and it started to work its way loose on a daily basis.
So I applied a very thin bead of clear silicone sealant in between the two interlocking metal pieces. I used a minimal amount so that I can still remove the mirror down the road if needed.
That totally eliminated the problem.

Perfect instructions
The mirror on my 2000 TL came loose and a piece of the bracket was broken (long story... tried to get a large box into the front seat and guess what happened).
So, bought a new mirror from the local Acura dealer and installed on my own using the instructions in this thread. Saved me $150 that the dealer was going to charge to install it.
Anyways, one thing I did forget was to leave the windshield-facing cover on the mirror while installing... was hella hard to get on after the fact.
Thanks again!

I tried to replace my mirror today but whatever I did, the thing didn't budge out.
Kinda frustrating... Was hoping (one in a million chance) to find a youtube video how to remove it.
I need more insight than what's already provided.

i believe i read this in the exploded thread but the way that works for me every time is as follows:
grab the top of the mirror with palms facing down, then place your thumbs on top of where it attaches to the windshield. push down with your thumbs and hands with about 60/40 percent force respectively. simultaneously wiggle the mirror left and right. it should pop right out
hope that helps

DONT wiggle it- thats how you crack the glass
note the locking tab in the pics above this post- the thing with the red box drawn around it
you have to slip a thin dental pick or flat screwdriver tpe tool into there and release the lock tab from the mirror- otherwise the unit wont budge off the base

just replaced mine today.. it only takes 5 mins.. just take a flat head and put it against the top of the part that mounts to the windshield and tap lightly with a hammer, it'll slowly come off.

the important part is releasing the locking clip-arm
the screwdriver is doing that
A gentle tap with a rubber mallet may be called for
the complete DIY with all pics should be there- did you look?

I've been trying this for a while today and am not getting anywhere and if anyone could help it would be great. I'm trying it with a flathead screw driver because I don't want to crack my windshield.
Just to be clear the flathead goes in slot B right? And from there what direction am i supposed to be angling it? If I just put it straight in it feels like I am hitting the metal piece that is built into the windshield (tapping it does nothing).

Thanks for all the tips, I got mind replaced from junk yard $40.00 shipped. Exactly what other says "Don't crack the windshield" since it's easy to crack with some force. The metal plate was stuck with the old unit, and I wiggle on the both side to get it out.

did they sell you the new updated unit.. or original with the same problem?
the green light is on the opposite side of mirror on new units
new are 80 on a score from a ziner dealer, or 150 retail

You can't count on that anymore. I bought one at the dealer that's clearly different from the original, but the lights are on the same sides as the old ones.

ahhh,,did not hear than info yet, thanks-
must be when they changed makers of the mirror
hopefully the old units were returned and rebuilt- to enter life again as new!
how is it clearly different?

Well, it's been a few months, and I pitched the old one, but I think the spacing between the lights was different and the way the mirror case contoured into the lights.

Earlier last year, the rearview mirror of my son's 99TL went south. The liquid in the LCD appeared to be leaking and distorted the image. I was able to obtain a replacement on eBay but was NOT able to easily remove the old to install the replacement.
The main obstacle was NOT wanting to RISK cracking the windshield which someone in this thread has already experienced. I opted to pay a nominal fee ($40) for the local dealership to do the job.
I strongly recommend to those facing problems with replacing their rearview mirror to not mess around. The windshield can easily crack and will shatter when just a slight amount of focused pressure is applied. Be very very careful. The cost of paying for a windshield does not justify saving a few bucks.
Let the dealership assume the risk!!!

a glass shop will do it for 20 and is a bargain for the risk they assume
ebay mirrors new or used? used is the same ol problem- the maker used to do an `exchange` but most people didnt return the old one,,and guess where they ended up!

I had to change the rear view mirror a couple of days ago & the hardest part was removing the mirror form the metal mount. Tried wiggling it like some said, that did not work. Only thing that could remove the mirror from the mount was to tap it gently with a screw driver and hammer, do the same thing to replace it.
Found out why one needs to do it this way, the mount has a raised knub thinging that holds the mirror. Hope this helps anyone else in the future if not it will at least be a reference for me in case I need to look back on how to change the mirror.

Not all places. I just went to a glass shop & they told me they weren't responsible for any damages.

Do you still have the "baggie" diaper on, in case it decides to take a dump ?

Thanks for the help guys, especially to Malay King for his advice to shake it like a polaroid picture.
For those that are having a hard time taking off the rear view mirror, put firm but not excessive pressure forward while shaking it side to side. That should do the trick.
The shop I took it to wanted to charge me $45. I said screw you and did it myself. This should take less than 10 minutes, just follow the step by step directions from Malay King. GL
