Removing the resonator w/o bumper removal aka "the easy way"

well everyone talks about removing the bumper to install an intake or take off the lower resonator. i was told the same thing when i was going to take off the stock piece from my 91 accord. i called bullshit... i took the easy/lazy way and didnt have to take off the bumper.

jack up, remove 2 plastic tabs and one screw and the plastic guard flips down. from there just reach up with a 10mm socket +extension and loosen the two bolts holding the resonator to the frame. then just yank it off. simple as that.

i had no idea what i was doing and i had the car resonator free in about 20min.

pics and vid to come

maybe the newer type-s' are different, i have no idea. but the way the resonator is shaped it would be impossible to pull it through the top. i can take a pic, but the lower half is huge.

anyways, heres a vid of how it sounds now. still kinda whimpy imo, but better. btw, its a bonestock motor. no header or exhaust. and this video is taken with a stock filter w/o resonator.
http://www.strodda.com/TL-S/tl-s%20wo%20resonator.avi

and here are a couple pics.

take off the two plugs and one screw and you see this...

2 bolts to undo at the top on the resonator and pull it down, thats all.

now it looks like this, ready to suck in all that cold bumper air.

ive got a question though. everyone talks about removing the resonator from the intake tube... mine doesnt have it, why is that? do only certain years have it?

well doing it that way is fine.. but removing the bumper takes no longer than ten minutes to do. plus you get a lot more room to work with

then again i pulled off TL bumpers on and off so many times that i could do it with my eyes closed now..

Just took it off today, sounds bit more agressive at WOT and towards the higher RPM range.. probably sounds just like an icebox. Gonna put in the K&N filter and we have a IceStock Box. hah

I took the bumper off because my fat hands couldnt fit inside to take the bolts off. Meh.

As for the intake tube resonator, my tl-p did have it, until I installed my CAI.

Maybe its for tl-p's only? Don't know, don't really care either.

Once you get the bumper off, it will be pretty clear what the resonator is. Two bolts on the side and it comes right off.

I take this back- i think i just pulled out the pipe that connects the stock intake pipe with the resonator. Upon bumper removal when i cleared my headlights i went ahead and took the rest out.. weight savings

Just removed mine, didn't take long really. But it's going to be hard to get it back in. It actually made my car have LESS POWER, it shifts very sloppy and has terrible get up. How many of you have actually had power and speed gains on the butt dyno? I was expecting more and got less. From my experience I wouldn't advise that you do this if you're going to use the stock intake.

You wont loose power. It may take a littel bit for the comp to get used to.

How long does that take?

I removed mine a while back, and only enjoyed the sound the first night. After, I feel it rides like ass compared to before it was removed. I'm actually planning on putting it back on.

TlsNavi03 and zpedrick: Think about this for a minute, dozens of people have removed the resonator and/or put in CAIs without causing problems. You guys do it and claim you lost power. You made a mistake somewhere.

It took less time to put it back in than it took to take it off (20 minutes tops). If I did something wrong then I don't know how, it's not that hard to do. All I did was simply remove the resonator.

There is no way it would have lost power. All the resonator is is exactly that, Its a muffler chamber to quiet the motor. Nothing more, nothing less. If they thought they lost power it was simply in their head. If any thing it would have gained some power due to less restrictive flow for the air into the engine

I never thought it lost power, in my case, I just felt the idle a little rougher (for lack of a better way of explaining). Maybe it was just a rougher sound at idle.

Thanks for the info though

if you haven't already, disconnect your battery for 20 minutes or so. you may need to let the computer re-learn, based on your greater airflow.

Look for the only 2 bolts on the resonator. 1 on each side. On the TL-P its alot easier to do this with the bumper off

Yeah, should I be worried about water getting in the intake box and engine when its raining and snow getting in and clogging it up in the winter?

I have a K&N filter in right now, so I'm curious what this could do to my Tl without any other engine mods.

The box breathes from a rather high point, just as stated above. No worries unless you are trying to cross a river, where flooding the engine is the least of your problems. A little water in the enigne shouldn't hurt too much, if at all, but I could be wrong.

Ok, just wanted to be safe than sorry. I'll probably take off this intake resonator on Friday.

What about the idle when parked? Is it really more rough than with the resonator off?

Ok, nice thanks!

Is the "little hum at idle" noticeable IF you were a passenger not knowing that I removed the intake resonator?

And would the sound intensity differ from the TL-P and TL-S, since the TL-P has a bigger resonator?

you can barely hear the hum at idle and both models sound pretty much the same without the resonator.
