Removing rearview mirror
Removing rearview mirror
how in the world do you remove the rearview mirror? may stablizing ring broke off, and i need to replace the mirror, but i can't figure out how to remove it. any ideas? thanks!
To be honest it can be a frustrating experience removing it. Their obviously is a metal catch epoxied to the windsheild. However, wonderful acura does not use a set screw like everyone else to attach the mirror to it. The mirror slides up from underneath and over the clip, locking in place (basically push up hard from the bottom up towards the headliner); but this is the easy part.
To take mine off (not knowing what it looked like inside), I used a large flat bladed screw driver and thin piece of cardboard. I put the cardboard against the windsheild and pryed both sides of the existing mirror a little bit at a time (you'll chew the mirror a little but I assume you're replacing it). There is a metal clip inside the mirror base itself that grips the mirror to the glued on fastener plate. If you weaken it enough by prying, you will be able to pull the mirror right off eventually. Be careful NOT to mess up your glass! (some people have chipped it)
To get the electrical connection off, open the eyeglass holder and remove screws. Remove the lens covers there and remove the screws and remove assembly.
Now, as I said, the mirror slides in from the bottom up. It MAY be possible to just pry the top of the mirror and force it down over the little lip of the fasterner it connects to. Never tried it this way though...

Remove the map light and sunglass assembly, four screws two are under the bulb cover.
Unplug the mirror.
Take a flat head screwdriver and a hammer and through the hole where the map lights were slightly tap on the base of the mirror, not the windshield holder.
To put back on tap on the other side, stop when the mirror stops.

Mine is messed up also, it kinda sits on there but when you hit a bump it will drop down and you'll be looking at the back seat. Just curious you bought a new rear view mirror from the dealer? How much does that cost? what year, model is yours? mine is a 2002 TL-S with some auto dimmer button? All they all like that?

OK,..I just did my brother's 02 TL-S and what a pain in the a$$ that was. The freakin' base broke off of the mirror, taking some glass with it too. Luckily, it didn't crack the windshield!!!
WTF?!?! So I took some 5minute epoxy, stuck it back on, cranked up the heat to 90 and let it sit there for about 20 minutes. I came back out put everything back together, slid the mirror onto the base and all is right in the world once more!!!! Thank God for this thread! Good luck to anyone who takes on this task!!!!
