Question Rear Brake Noise

Has anyone encountered a small knocking noise eminating from the rear wheel well area when stepping on the brakes...does not occur when braking hard...it may be my brake shoes but not sure...1999 TL w/63K

First of all your car has four wheel disc brakes, hence you have brake pads all around. Brake shoes are used on cars/trucks that have "drum type" brakes.

I would guess that the pads are not seated well and are knocking up against the brake caliper. It's probably not hurting anything, but it is annoying.

Do you use your emergency brake? I think on the TL the emergency brake is self-adjusting (everytime you use it). If not, go to a safe spot, drive backwards and slowly step on the emergency brake. This was a method that has worked on some cars.

Have you replaced your brakes yet? If not at 63K miles it may be time.

Good luck.
