Re-wired Fogs bad for bulbs???

I'll be doing the fog mod and changing the bulbs to Sylvania Silverstars this weekend. Someone told me that the excessive flashing of the fog lights when arming and disarming the alarm will shorten the bulbs life. Could this be true? Has anybody experienced that with their re-wired fogs?

Why would your fog lights flash when you arm the alarm? The only thing that flashes on my car is the parking lights... and I've had my fogs rewired for over a year now.....

I think he is assuming that because you're wiring the fogs to come on with the parking lights, when they flash, so will the fogs. Is he making the wrong assumption?

I believe I know what he's talking about. You have the option of having the fogs come on when you lock / unlock. Just leave the fog button engaged. If you don't want the fogs to come on during lock / unlock, just make sure you press the button and turn it off. I personally think its bad for a light to turn on and off many times so I just leave my fogs off as default.

i highly doubt that. lots of cars have the headlights flash when you hit the alarm.

don't sweat it, its not like they'll burn out in a month. that was the first thing i did to my car and i love it. i love driving around at dusk with just the fogs, the car looks badass...

Lightbulb

That is it then... my fog button is never on unless I turn them on... I do not leave it on all of the time. Makes sense that if you leave the button on it will flash with the parking lights... but I don't do that

I don't think that it would be much of a problem unless you have HID fogs.

Exactly, there will be no problem whatsoever. Don't want to sound like a a$$, but whoever told you that doesn't know much about cars! :p :p Unless you have HID's then it will be bad for the ballast. the foglight mod was my second mod to my car when i purchased it. And it's been like this for 8 months, with the foglight switch always on.

Same as ElegantTL-S, I have been running with that setup for awhile.

I did have one of my fogs burn out, but there is a TSB about it, my fog mod had nothing to do with it. I guess the stock fog bulbs are sub par quality, because the TSB states to replace the bulbs with a new part number that is 'higher quality'.

RobsTL-S,

The general consensus here is correct: doing the fog light mod does not mean the fogs have to flash every time you arm/disarm the car. You *can* have it do that if you leave the fog light switch in the "on" position when you shut off the car. Once you do that the fog lights act like two more parking lights and go on and off with the rest. If you shut the switch off, they will not come on at all.

As for whether or not repeatedly flashing a halogen bulb shortens its useful life, that's an argument that has never been definitively settled. Some say the repeated quick heating and cooling of the tungsten filament will shorten the life, while others say long-time use with extended periods of heat kills them quicker. It's like the argument of what's better for your PC--turning it on and off when you need it or leaving it on 24/7. No one really knows. I replaced my fogs with Sylvania Silverstars over a year ago and I have the fog light mod and so far I'm on the same bulbs. No problems here.
