Rattling Noise

I have this rattling noise coming from the back of my car that I can't pinpoint. I was hoping some of you could help. It's this noise that sounds almost like you're tapping on a piece of plastic. It's definitely coming from somewhere in the back. The noise doesn't make a sound when it's raining or if it's very humid. I think the moisture is making whatever is making the noise to expand. Thanks, for any help.

mawaru,

I've found that the torsion bars for the trunk lid have a little play in them where they attach to the rear deck. You'll see what i mean if you look just aft of the subwoofer. I stuck a piece of cardboard in there to tighten it up a bit.

Hope this helps

Iggy

This could also be sound resonating through the overhead liner from the well documented sunroof/overhead rattle. We had that one fixed at the dealer but it really sounded like it was coming from the rear lid/sub woofer area. If you do a search on "rattle" you will learn all you ever wanted to know about the most common TL rattles and possible fixes for them.

I also thought my sunroof rattle was coming from the rear of the car flexing. i.e. entering driveways, gravel etc. Try opening and closing your sunshade on the sunroof, and see if the sound is significantly reduced. It was in my car. Maybe that will help you pinpoint your problem? I agree doing a search on rattles is a good idea, just make sure you have plenty of spare time.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's definitely not the sunroof. It could be the trunk torsion bars though. I definitely take a look at them. It's definitely coming from that general area.

I had the same problem and fixed it easily

Look up at the middle of the headliner while sitting on the rear seat. There is a plastic cap/screw type thing. I took that screw out, greased it up really nicely and greased up the socket that it goes into and the sound has been gone every since.

To make sure its the same sound, does the sound go away if you push up on the headliner while driving? If yes then its the same sound that I experienced.
