Rattle coming from rear

I have a funny rattle coming from the rear of my car. When I hit a bump or dip in the road, there is a clanking noise that comes from the rear drivers side (I think that's where it is coming from). It is pretty hard to diagnose it, if i try to shake the car while it is standing still I won't hear it. It sounds as if maybe the muffler or tail pipe would be loose and it is clanking around or almost as if there would be something in the trunk clanking, but there is nothing loose in the trunk. Has anyone had this before or know what it might be from? I figured I'd throw it out there for the heck of it, though it seems far fetched that you guys would know what it is without looking or hearing it. Thanks anyway in advance.

Donny

Just to let you know, the car is less than a month old with a little over 1,000 miles. It is totally stock, for now.

Definitely check for loose stuff rolling around in the trunk. Could be somethign simple.

I would also check the end links on sway bars. Many people with Comptech sways have experienced this problem, including me. I know you said you are stock, but they could easily be loose.

You'll need an allen wrench and an open end wrench to tighten them up.

Thanks for the replies guys, but like I've said I have not installed any sways or anything. Does the car come stock with sways? To be honest I have not gotten under the car yet. Thanks.

Yes, I said even though you don't have Comptech sways, the OEM end links could still be loose.

It wouldn't be something simple like the license plate or license plate holder, would it? Just didn't want to overlook the easy stuff!

VPerkins, not sure, but good thought, I'll check that out, though I think that it's pretty snug.

I have a similar cracking noise when I hit a big bump. It's been discussed on this board before. I've pinpointed mine to the back winshield. But it very rarely happens.

I sat in the back and the trunk while someone drove in a parking lot . Sound is definately suspension related and Im going t ocheck the factory sways and endlinks this weekend. I dont have comptech sways so I dont think you need to have any mods to have this problem but having lowered suspension or sways seems to make the noise appear sooner.

what kind of sound are you getting?

go to the trunk and see if the trunk emergency release cable is routed away from any metal peices, because if it is hanging loose, it contacts the metal peices and makes a crisp and noticeable rattling noise when the car goes over a bump

just some opinions, because this happened to my car, the cable is tied at places, but the parts hanging loose were jumping around making annoying noises

Found the source of my noise. It is a short 2 inch bar that has round heads. Looks like a mini dumbel that is part of the suspension. It was loose on both ends so it would shift up and down making what sounds like a pad lock jingling around. It is the bar you have to remove when installing the rear struts. Guess I didnt tighten it correctly. You need a strong allen key tool to hold in place while you turn it with a wrench.

hatzq68,

Try this.... look down under the chassis, right where the rear, driver-side passenger would sit... there is a metal, black box with wires going into it.... try tap it and see if it's the one making the noise... also, try open/close drive side doors(front and rear), see if that's the sound you are looking for....
