Raced a v6 Jetta
I have not had too many races in my 03 TLS but the other day a v6 Jetta with some sort of after market exhaust (I have no idea what other mods he may have had?) merges on the highway and kind of cuts me off and starts to gun it. I was doing roughly 65 and downshift into third and stay right on his tail. He then moves into the right lane and leaves my lane open. We both gunned it and I started to pull on him and made up about 1 ½ car lengths by the time we hit 110 and traffic got in the way. I know I was faster then him since I made up the 1 ½ car lengths but I guess I was expecting to destroy him and just pull away. I know it is hard to tell what he had under the hood but still, A JETTA??? (my car is stock by the way).

A Jetta GLX is a lot lighter and has about 195 hp and a manual trans, they are very respectably fast, be proud that you pulled on him, then get headers and an intake so you are ready for next time.

Technical specs run somewhere around this if I remeber:
TL's 14.8 quarter (but actually has a very fast 0-100)
VR6 Jetta (stock) upper 15's
He only did as well as he did probably due to mods

I was pretty much dead even with a VR6 at the 1/8th mile track. I was stock, and he only had intake. I won 2, he won 1. It was my first time at the track, and I was using SS mode. You rarely get to third on the 1/8th mile track. If I would have been using the shift gate, I probably would have won everytime.

it only has 172hp, not 195
it's a 15 degrees V6 with SOHC and 12 valves...
although it has only 172hp, but it has generous torque at low-end and better high end power than the 180hp 1.8T engine...
the advantage of the VR6 is u can have more heavy mods than 1.8T into it...anything u can name...neuspeed turbo/supercharger...and it can pumps out more than 400hp with all those mods...
the disadvantages are it's getting old and expensive for mods...and the new 24 valve V6 with 6spd manual is on the way
i guess the car u raced was lightly moded...maybe a supercharger thou...

If it was a new GLX, it has 200 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The original VR6 had 172 but has since been beefed up.
The first week I had my TL-S, I had a little scuffle with a Jetta. I think it was a GLX but I don't know for sure because all the badging had been removed. This was before I had really gotten a feel for my car and didn't realize that it wouldn't shift down to 3rd if you were already going over 85. When I left it in D5 and it shifted down to 4th, I was maybe pulling away from him ever so slowly. I tried using SS to shift down to 3rd but that didn't work. Being a "newbie", I didn't think to shift down to 3rd manually. I was pretty disappointed but in hindsight, when I realized what I did wrong, I know I would have smoked him. I felt much better.

Three Wheelin'
I had a 98 VR6 Jetta with a few mods an a manual tranny, did 15.33 at the track, but the local dealer was soooooo bad that I traded it in on my TL. Needed a bigger car as well. Jetta weighed 3100 lbs.

That's about right. I don't think the Jetta was modded as some of you suspect.
When my TL had H/I/E/VAFC tuned I was pushing 204HP and about 198TQ. I raced a Jetta VR6 5spd bone stock and beyond 80 I was pulling ever so slowly and at around 115 or so he caught up and started to pass. Believe me I was pissed and thougth I was gonna blow him away like Frohlich, but despite popular belief, the Jetta is not that slow. Maybe off the line may not be as fast but once moving, it's no slouch.
After that incident I think I owned the TL for another week or two and got rid of it. TL was pretty bursty off the line, but once moving I realized how not impressive the car was.

i read the corvette M3 911 comparison a couple months ago...
and guess what....the 5.7 liter V8 405hp Corvette has the best fuel economy with around 30mpg on hwy...at 60mphs just loafing at 1200rpm in 6th gear
while 3.6 liter 911 and 3.2 liter M3 are in low 20s...

Mainly because they are simply higher output engines. My S2000 got 9mpg at PIR, the same as my boss's M5
