Raced a E46 M3 Convertible

So I'm sitting at this light next to an E46 M3 convertible with the top down when the light turns green... I step on the gas fairly normal when I hear the M3 rev his engine and start to pull past me. I'm in second at this point in SS mode, so I drop it into first and gun it ...

The guy must have not known what he was doing or decided to give up at 50 mph, because when I shifted back into second I started pulling on him, and by the time I hit 3rd gear I was ahead of him...

For all you non-believers, I know an E46 M3 is faster than my car even a convertible with the top down, but this comes down more to the driver than anything else I think ...

Anyways, it was fun. But I'd still rather be driving the M3 if I had a choice

Cool run. I have yet to raced an E46 M3. I know I would get my ass spanked, but I just want to see how badly.

How did you manage to go from 2nd to 1st? Unless I'm mistaken, you can't ride 1st unless you WOT from the line.

ya, thats impossible unless the 2003's changed the way their SS works...but you cannot control the 1->2 or 2->1 shift in SS mode...unless ou shifted all the way down to D1 which probbaly did wonders for your tranny

Actually, I think I've had it before to where the car downshifts to 1st in SS when I floor it but I'm not 100% sure. And I admit that I am too scared to try it again and find out .

let's clarify things here ppl...

if you're in SS mode, and your car shifts into second, and you're going slower then 50 km/h and you step on the gas, the automatic thing that the car will do is gear down to 1st gear to give you more torque. However, if you're car is in second gear and you're going like 60 km/h then you will find yourself trailing miles behind most cars as I find our cars torque out in that range. Since you're going to fast for 1st gear and your car is in the low end of 2nd gear, you'll find that even when you floor the gas, the car will have very poor acceleration. Try to steer clear of that combo of speed and gears...as you'll find yourself losing a lot of races!!!

sc354 is right, I have an '03 TLS and if you are within range it will kick down to 1st (in SS mode)until it reaches its limits and then to 2nd and so on.
Yes also you can manually shift down to 1st in SS mode within its range but you have to step on the gas to do so and unless you are faster than the computer, the car will do it for you, even in SS mode. After that you have to shift yourself from 2nd and on and until red line is reached then again the car will do it for you. This is to avoid breaking your baby.
I don't think the M3 boy was hit it in hard btw.

To all that were curious, to "drop it into 1st", all I did was step on the gas all the way ... I was actually surprised that the car did this as well because I'd never done it before. I was only going about maybe 25mph at the time, so I was going slow enough that the car wouldn't prevent me from downshifting into first.

And yes, I know that in a true race, the M3 would spank me

Hmmm...last week I was at a red light next to a red corvette Z06. We both took off pretty briskly then at about 25-40 I pulled way ahead of the Corvette. Did my 2000 3.2 tlp I beat him in race....??? Nope

Keep dreaming if you think you took that BMW...not everybody is racing us when we think they are.

I could post all week about different cars like 7 series and vettes that I took at the light but be for real...225 hp vs. 300 plus hp. Be happy our cars are as peppy as the are to keep up.

Post that a TL took an Impala or neon but not BMW and mercedes etc.

If it seemed to easy it was not a race...

how 'bout next time someone that reads this forum wins a race in his/her tl/s they keep it to themself? no one beleives each other around here anyways. or if they do, they say "the guy wasnt racing" what bs. no one beleives yet that my car that has well over 300hp can beat out a car with 400hp if the driver stinks. gee whiz. anyways, i always tell people i can beat the average driver of a gt2(if there is such a thing) with a vw bus! yep, i am that good . (the previous statement was meant to be a joke before y'all start flaming me).

The fact that the guy revved his engine and flew past me was kindof an indicator that he was racing. I can easily tell the difference between revving your engine, and not revving ... It wasn't like he took off real slow and I gunned it past him. He passed me with his engine screaming, and after that I'm not sure when he let off cuz at that point all I heard was my engine hit VTEC (just stating that my engine is loud)...

Like I said, I think the guy probably let off the gas around 50mph OR he just didn't know what he was doing after he gunned it and mis-shifted, because I started to pull on him when I hit second gear.

I'm not trying to lie or make the TL-S out to be something its not ... I was just relaying my story. If you don't like it, then tell your own goddamn story

And by the way, its not 225hp vs. 300+hp ... I do have a TL-S, with some minor mods ... So its closer to 260hp (could potentially gain some more cuz of my intake, but we'll skip it since its mostly BS)...

So 260hp/232ft/lbs & 3574 lbs curb weight, with some minor wind resistance at higher speeds versus 333hp/262ft/lbs & 3781 lbs curb weight, with major wind resistance because his top is down ...

With equal drivers? M3 wins. Impossible? No.

D@mn...I was just about to write this long post about this grandma in a 1981 Mercedes 300D smogging up the left lane of I95 at 60mph when I blew by her by 20car lengths to 100mph. Oh well...

I think the M3 driver had his right foot on the left pedal, but this post is great nevertheless...
