Questions for purchasing used '02 TL-S

i'm on the verge of picking up a used 2002 TL-S; 23,000 mi and buying for $18,776.. (no nav) i think it is a good deal, any opinions??

This forum has been extremely helpful in terms of lookikng up potential problems....i have a few questions that i have before purchasing that would help me out greatly.

1. Looks like there is good possibility that the tranny will go on this car. This is not a CPO, i'm buyin from a subaru dealer. So is the acura's 7yr/100K warranty still applicable for this car? Or do i have to purchase some sort of extended warranty? And the problem is shifting from 2nd to 3rd right? I will def. check this out when i go for a test drive.

2. Do you think i can knock some extra $$ off b/c of the tranny issue? If so, what do u think is reasonable?

3. read a thread on pinstripes...can they be removed?? is the original pinstriping painted or is it a decal type thing?....any experiences?

4. Once i get the car...i want to replace the stock fog light bulbs with yellow bulbs...i always like the contrasting colors on the lexus's with the HID and bright yellow fogs....any suggestions??

any other comments before i purchase are welcome too! I always loved this model TL and am willing to overlook the tranny issue esp. if i can knock some more $$ off since it is all under warranty. And i think i got a really great deal on this car.....plus, only one owner from PA....unlike drivers from NJ/NYC....

here's some ext. pics...www.xanga.com/ttlpakage

THANKS!!

I will not pay so much knowing about the possible tranny issues. Although the milage is low, the maximum I'd probably pay is $17k. I not sure on how the warranty will work. I don't think that the pinstripes are not removable because I was at a acura dealer once and saw them painting the stripes on. I have a 2000 so not familiar with them fogs, but good luck on your purchase!

Where in PA are you? Also, only the tranny is covered for 7/100 not the whole car. Get the VIN and call an Acrua dealer to see if the tranny has been replaced or any other info on the car. Thats what I did when I got my '02 in May w/ 29K. Even at 29K my tranny has already been replaced.......and always negotiate! Especially w/ a non-Acura dealer! Good luck.

The pinstriping will depend if it was painted on or was a decal. If it was a decal all you really need is a hair dryer to heat the glue up and just pull it off.
If you look closely you can tell if it's a decal or not.

As said that price is a little high, it would seem. I bought an 02 back in Feb. and paid about $5K less. Mine did have sort of high miles but I would shoot for at least 1K off of that amount for your car.

It doesn't sound like too bad of a price, actually. You're well covered - you still have the new car warranty until 50K assuming time doesn't run out on you first, and you've got the 7/100K powertrain. My suggestion would be to find an Acura dealer in your area that you like and get really obsessive/compulsive about your car while it's still covered. My dealer replaced my transmission without inspection. I told him what it was doing on the phone, and he ordered a new one and put it in. The new transmissions are much improved, so just figure getting one. Good luck.......................Oh yeah, lose the gold emblem package...
