Questions about TL-Type S
Hey all.
I am new to the site, think it's great.
I am in the process of looking for a Used 02 TL Type S. I'm glad I came here 1st to read. I'm very worried about the transmission problems I've been reading about. This was strange to me as all of the reviews on Edmonds, J.D. Power, Motor Trend, etc., give the TL rave reviews, and don't mention tranny problems.
I know that 00-02 TL's are covered under an extended warranty, but I imagine it's a hassle to deal with when the tranny dies.
Shoud I be worried about these transmission problems???? It has me not wanting to consider what was my 1st and only choice for a new car. I am not considering 03's due to wanting to save money and buy used. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks.

actually, you might not save much. If you are considering an 02, you should really look at a new 03. with the 2.9% finance and the deals they are giving off sticker, you could end up being at the same payment. I wouldn't get the 02 unless the one you are looking at is incredibly clean and selling for under $20k, otherwise just get a new one.
also, the 03 should have better luck with the tranny, as they supposedly fixed them. nothing for sure, but you also will have at least the 4/50,000 mile warranty with the new one to give you some protection. all that said, if the 02 is covered under the extended warranty, you should be ok until 100k miles, i believe.
I looked breifly at used tl's, but really with the deals they have on the new ones it isn't worth the used car hassle. good luck!

I would buy an '03 and stay away from the 02's. It's too bad, because it is a great car. merlin is correct, you would be much better off with a deal on an '03. Maybe you can find a dealer demo.
