Question for NJ people

I'm not sure about this, but I heard there recently was an change in NJ law that, now, legally allows for a maximum of 35% tint on the front windows. I haven't been successful in verifying this on the internet, but I have sent an email to my local police department. Has anyone heard anything about this? I will update you all once I get a reply from the PD.

In some areas the police are cool about tints on the front windows as long as your not involved in another moving violation such as speeding. From my experiences in the past, I've never been let go with a warning for tints. I always get a ticket...never fails. On top of it, they take away my FOP card. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't see the big deal about tints all around. If it was such a safety hazard for the police as they claim, then why is it legal in other states, regardless of what kind of weather they have?

Where was this so I can avoid it?

I have 20% tints all around also. I got stopped once for my front tints but the cop gave me a warning, thank god.

i heard technically tint isn't illegal. i have acouple of cops that are close friends of the family and acouple of them told me that the satute states that any film thats not tranparent is ticketable, so i guess if you have light enough tint that can been easily seen through you can fight it in court. theres a lot of **** i find out from them, like technically the frames the dealer puts on your license plate, if it anyway covers the plate not even the numbers, you can get a ticket for that. anything hanging on your rear view mirror is ticketable. its all stupid if you ask me

I'm not a lawyer, I just did some research on the subject... (So I could be completely wrong, feel free to correct or amend my conclusions and interpretations...)

The statute that dictates motor vehicle codes isn't very helpful in determining the amount of legal tint (Title 39:3-74~75)...

As best as I can tell, it looks like the only legal tint is -

Front Windshield - NO TINT OF ANY KIND LOWER than 6 inches from top of windshield or past the AS-1 markings (whatever that is).
Front Side Windows - No tint seems legal
Rear Side Windows (behind the driver) - Any tint
Rear Window - Any tint, as long as it does not obscure or cover the high-mounted rear stoplight.

The statue does make provisions for vehicles with completely blacked out and/or painted rear-side and rear windows (ie panel vans) so it would seem that limo tint in the rear & rear side windows is okay. The only catch is that side mirrors must be installed on the vehicle.

As for the $400 ticket... However unclear the law is on amount of legal tint, it does specifically state that the fine for a violation cannot exceed $100.00 (Title 39:3-75.3). YMMV

I have my wife's CR-V fully tinted all the way around and she's never been pulled over in 5 years. Every two years when inspection is due I pay $60 to have the tint removed, then I got through inspection and back to the tint shop for reapplication for another two years.

I quoted you because my friend recently got a ticket for tint in Marton and it was a fine (not a moving violation) of $40. Of course, he has a modified Mustang GT with a throaty exhaust which drew attention to him.

shimbo...i agree with you. i see cars with tints on the front windows everyday. Ironic part is, I always see them in the town that I used to get pulled over in all the time for tints...i wish i had them. I'm just not willing to fork over 40 bucks everytime i get a ticket. that's money i can put towards my monthly payment. ah well...i guess you have to be willing to take the risk. by the way, watch out for the east brunswick cops...some of them can be real sh*theads.
