Question about upgrading oil and gas
#41
So anyways... it's starting to get mixed up
Would Mobile 1 synthetic and Mobile 1 oil filter be a good choice to switch to? I have already switched to V-Power at shell, I drove over 25miles after my light came on just to make to a shell verses going to a no-name gas station lol.

m1 EXTENDED and and m1 filter are fine in your TL
I like a K&N filter because of the large nut to remove it with
If you have been running no name gas throw a bottle of redline SI-1 fuel cleaner or seafoam at 1/2 tank of gas to clean residue
Never hurts to do an induction cleaning too--intake manifold/seafoam cleaning
I would run 6 oz seafoam in the old oil, drive 30 minutes then change when warm

the low fuel light comes on at 3 gal remaining of which about 2.5 is useable
Thats so you can make it 50 miles to a station of your preferance
Most of the big name stations are tier1 now, which means they add double the amount of cleaner the govt requires be added to ALL gasoline.
govt is minimum- tier 1 is double so it actually works~

Yes. Most of the local autopart stores sell it. Picked some up @ Autozone last week (about $10 for the 16oz can).

Question is why? You save maybe 3 bucks at the pump. Run what the car recommends.

it says right there by the gas cap- 91 octane minimum--
why do people think they know more than acura.. and their butt dyno says everything is fine--all while the computer is making massive adjustments to compensate!!
Seafoam is found everywhere from autozone to wallyworld 8-10$ per 16 oz can
Deep Creep is seafoam aerosol version- 16 oz also
to do the oil cleaning method - add 1/3 can seafoam to full oil, drive 30 minutes/miles and immedialty change oil and filter with engine still warm- so all the crud stays liquified and drains out
If you think your engine is really dirty-
install a new oil filter before seafoam- then add foam -drive-drain.
Thats to make sure the old filter doesnt reach its capacity and allow stuff to bypass filter and keep flowing thru the system
The whole point of the cleaning is to get that stuff loose then captured
a 3$ filter is fine for that job

Thanks everyone for all the help so I have switched to Shell V-Power officially, and only that. On my next oil change in about 2.5k miles or so I will seafoam the car, change the oil to Mobile 1 fully Synthetic 5w-30 oil and probably a K&N Oil Filter, how does that sound?

dont worry about what brand.... shell uses the same transport pipes as exxon.. exxon uses the same as chevron.. chrevron uses the same as texaco... youre getting the same premium fuel no matter where you go despite popular belief.. yes they all use different methods of processing.. but if you think you can mix 3,4,5 brands of gas in one pipe and still come out with differences in them.. ju are loco son...
just use premium no matter where you go if thats what you use.

Yea and when i ran it the car was noticeably slower, and i saw a 60 or so mile reduction per tank.

one or 2 ziners reported 87 was ok- but they never pulled the heads to see what it looked like inside--or did a month on 91 vs a month 87
I know rob did his own testing because he got free 87 at work iirc, and thats fine for his car,,,which did have a few problems of its own,,including some valve adjustment issues-
was that from stuff loaded up on the valve stems or gunky top end??---
I believe he sold that car recently so we dont know the real long term effects
while several brands of gas do indeed come from the same pipe at the refinery- the last step in the process is the mixing room right before the truck,,where each maker adds its own formula of fuel cleaners, boosters, octane additive, ignition delaying stuff etc.
So each name has its own final formula which is slightly different than the next guys.
Most name brand gas stations are Tier1 quality- meaning it contains twice the govt min required cleaners.
You dont have to kill yourself looking for shell,,,, chevron 76,,just find one on the list and its good...one will report better performamce on one brand over the next- and next person will counter...

Hey 01tl4tl, if they add their own additives (like fuel cleaners, octane boosters) are those ones you add in the tank worthless? I've never really thought about it til I read your post a few moments ago.

the govt has a minimum cleaning agents amount, thats tier2 standard found at no name stations
double the min amount of cleaners added is Tier1 quality gas- most name brands now
Even with tier1 there is crud buildup which needs to be removed yearly, so the extra cleaner is to give it a boost~
some work great, some no so well

gas starts as 87 octane in the main line- then combuston inhibitors are added to delay flashover,,thats what raises the octane rating to 89-91-93
