Question about tires...

Stock tires on the TL-P... 205/60/16 right?

Is it possible to put wider tires on the car, while keeping stock rims? I don't get it, shouldn't the tires be as wide as the rim? If it's wider, wouldnt the rubber hang off the sides unsupported? I apologize in advance for this stupid question.. :p

The sidewall will bulge out from the rim more with a wider tire, but there's nothing to worry about. I currently am running a 235/45/17 on a stock TL-S rim which requires a 215/50/17 tire. I believe that you can go 225/55/16 on a TL-P rim with no issues.

How wide the tire can be depends on the width of the wheel and the height of the sidewall. The shorter the sidewall (the lower the profile), the closer the width of the tire must be to the width of the wheel. But no matter how low the profile, the tire will always be wider than the actual wheel - it is rubber so it can flex.

Does the tires rub at all w/ your 235/45/17? It would be nice to have meatier tire on the TL-S

No rubbing, but awesome handling. The spec is almost dead on for your speedo (something like 99.6X% of the 215/50/17). Suggestion, do it.

Do the wider tires affect gas mileage + or -? and how much?

I would imagine a wider tire (or wheel) with more rolling resistance would definitely affect gas mileage.

I dunno, but for me, I don't want that "oversized" tire look like most 5.0 Mustang folks do on their rear tires. I'd say 215/55/16 just to keep it looking close to stock.
