Gate shifting: Manually selecting the shift. (NOT SPORT SHIFT)
How: Put it in 1st, 2nd etc. up to 5th.
Why: You can hold the gear up to redline and sometimes a couple of hundreds rpms more before the rev limiter kicks in allowing you to extract those extra hp out of that engine.

Just to add to Maxx96's response, you get to control the 1-2 shift. The ECU will shift from 1-2 for you when you are in Sportshift. If you gate shift then you can hold first higher in the rpm band. oh and gateshifting is going from D1-D2-D3 etc.
I ran a slightly better time gateshifting than SS.

The RSX is able to hold 1st in SS.....
