A question About a 1999 TL

Hello,

Yesterday I was at a dealership that was selling a 99 TL with 34,621 miles on it. The dealer wanted 16,495 for the car. The most I was willing to pay was 14,500. He said that I would never be able to get a car for that price. I said that 01 TLs sell for 16,495 and he laughed and walked away. To make a long story short did he try to rip me off with his high price?

Also, the car is located in NJ if that helps

99 and 01's are basically the same cept for the transmission, If I had the choice between the 99 or the 01 I'd get the 99 cuz they had the less troublesome transmission of the 2nd gen TL's. But with that mileage on a 99, I just checked Edmunds, the car should retail for $14,532, click the link.

http://www.edmunds.com/used/1999/acu...ption.1.Acura*

Now if it was a choice between the 99 TL and any year TL Type-S, transmission problems be damned I'd pick the Type-S.

that is way too high, I paid 14,900 2yrs ago for my 99tl w/64k miles and it was in perfect condition too. Check autotrader.com or autoweb.com and you'll find plenty of 99 tl's for much lower prices. also don't be scared off by 99's with 60-70k miles, the engine and tranny are bulletproof! if i had a choice between a 99 and 02-03 tl-s i would pick my 99, maybe I am a little biased but when I bought my car I could have afforded a tl-s, but didn't want to deal with the tranny issue and I put a lot of miles on my car. save some money get a 99 then get some mods and you'll be lovin' it.

The engine, yes. The transmission? No way.

99 trannys have much fewer problems than 00-03 that's a fact. I have 111k on my original tranny and it is as smooth as silk and bet it lasts me 200k, knock on wood. To me that is bulletproof.

Wow a 99TL with 34k miles is astonishing, like 5.5k a year??? If you can pick it up for 14g or less, that would be a great deal!!!

Talking about low miles. I recall awhile ago, I saw an 93 Acura Legend GS coupe with only 8k miles, asking for 21grand, shoot I can get a 02/03 TLS for that price.

16,500 sounds good. You be the judge.

99 TLs don't have anywhere close to as many tranny problems as 00-03 do. Some people with 99 TL may end up with a bad tranny because of the previous owner. However, the majority of 99s have no problems whatsoever.

Well, yeah, I know it's less prone to failure compared to '00-'03 models, but they are still failing. That's why '99 is also covered under the extended transmission warranty.

Does it have a navigation system? If so, $15,385, if not $14,950. (KBB)

What kind of dealer? An Acura dealer? Was the car Acura Certified? If it was an Acura Certified car with NAVI, the dealer was a little high. If not, he was way high.

It was an acura dealer, it wasn't acura certified and it doesn't come with a navigation system.

Thanks everyone for all of your responses and help.

I'd ask them why it's not Acura Certified.

i agree, ask if it's acura certified and bring a printout from KBB and show it to them and also print out some autotrader.com and autoweb.com listings or says screw that dealer cause the guy sounds like an asshole and the dealership is probably like that too.

Also, a car that is 6 years old will never be Acura certified... it has to be less than 4 years (or maybe 5)

I test drove a gold 2001 TL with 33,000 miles in February for $16,895. The price for that 99 is way too high.

uhh.. i bought my 99TL with 65K on it for 12K.
Acura Dealer, awesome guy who always helped us out though so we got away with an aawesome deal.

the tranny went once at 72k but now its pretty good. the exterior and interior is pretty much perfect. the interior did have squeaks and rattles but tighting a few bolts and lubing a few places took care of it and now it feels like im riding a car with less than 10k's on it.

I have a 99 TL P with Navi and 115K; car is in mint shape. I've taking good care of her and the only major thing that I've had to do to it was replace the AC compresser last week. I'm getting ready to do the timing belt and pump just because of the miles. The car runs perfect and the AC is freaking awesome. I was thinking of trading her in and the stealer offered me $3500. I just laughed and walked off. Trade in on my car according to KBB is around 8-9K considering the condition the car is in. May throw it on Auto Trader, what do you think would be a fair price?

Probably like 9k? Just check what other ones are listed for in your area.

$16,5 is too high for that car. Its 6 years old already and not certified. I've seen TL-S's for a little more than that. What dealer was in NJ was it?

http://kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.ur?kb...0TL&7;AC;D2&&&

And it was actually almost 17k a few months ago.

Edit: well shite, the link won't work, but it's Kelley Blue Book retail value in 94619 on my car with 40k miles on it.

I don't know guys, because I got my 98 2.5 TL for 11K with 63,000 miles. We've had like 7 Acuras so we get significant reductions on the prices of the cars. It sounds like if you guys think you are getting ripped off for a 99TL, which is much nicer than mine, with that low mileage and that price, we must have gotten screwed to the face on mine.

Just curious....why did you replaced your first tranny? Did you just got it replaced even though it's not failing?

The clunking sound could have been just the engine mounts.

Thanks for all of your help, I spoke with the dealer and he said that he can sell the car for $15,000, but I still feel that it still overpricing the car in this region(NJ). But if I can get him to come down on the price 500 dollars then I will get it.

Just curious. What is the "original" price the dealer gave you?

Well, it is up to you but kbb now retail my 02TLP w/ 40k miles for 21.6k, where I got mine from Acura dealer 7 months ago w/27k for 19k AND I got certified too. Oh, by the way the dealer asked for 22.5k at the time.
