Question

OK so my gas mileage has been fairly crappy lately. About 16/21 (city/Hway)

I am due for an oil change.

Tomorrow I am switching to synthetic, and also installing NGK Iridium Spark Plugs, also gonna overinflate the tires a little.

2 questions:

1 - I am picking up Mobil 1 Syn Oil at Wal Mart, which filter should i get. . .(make sure wal mart carries it, cause i dont wanna run all over town)

2 - When installing the plugs do i need to unhook the battery? Is this necessary? preferred? a waste of time?

Any other pointers will be appreciated

thanks

These are my opinions...

I know some filters are better (Amsol and Mobil 1), but like you, WalMart doesnt have it so I just go with the Fram extra guard...whatever one is middle of the line (it has the best 2nd pass filtering) with Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic.

I just ordered the NGK Iridium plugs also, might as well disconnect the battery - just to be safe. Make sure you have your radio and/or Navi code handy when you reconnect everything.

your less than usuall gas mileage is probably from the winter gas.

overinflating your tires isnt that good of an idea. It may give you 1 or 2 more MPG on the highway, but wont do a thing around town. plus it will make the ride more bumpy.

too bad for you I am right!!! and what is the werd for?

in the Northern or colder climates, the gas is a "winter blend" and that blend affects your gas mileage for the worse.

http://www.stretcher.com/stories/980105d.cfm

"• Fuel Type — Summer gas has a higher BTU rating than winter gas due to pollution control issues in most parts of the US. Thus, you get more energy per unit of gasoline with Summer gas. Thus, in addition to the cold weather hit alone, now you get less 'bang-for-the-buck' from your gasoline. Make it another 5% and you're down into the mid-40s mpg area down from the 55mpg you may have gotten in the summer!! And it's completely out of your control."

how is your air filter? maybe a good ole tune up will help some. Also, what is your driving style? I mean how often do you push the engine into the VTEC range (4000RPM +)? If you always accelerate quickly and shift right around that 4000 RPM range, that will kill your gas mileage. Our engines get great gas mileage if you drive them easy, but once you push to VTEC they haul ass and drink gas - V8 style.

hmmmm...tune up being most things in your manual under the 90 or 100K service. what you are going to do is a great start. check hoses and belts...you know, but I still cant see why your gas mileage is lower.

only 1-2 times a tank? thats half your problem right there you drive like mis daisy! nd your TL doesnt like it!

there is no such thing as a tune up any more. how old are your plugs? unless you are over 70k i wouldnt really bother. i replaced mine at 115k and the only thing i got from them was a slightly smoother idle.
as for tires, i always run mine at 38-40psi. never a problem.
as for gas winter blends suck dog crap!
try changing gas stations for awhile and see which ones are a little better. try changing your driving style a little too. im hard on my gaspedal and i dont get bad mileage

also what do you do more of cty or hwy?

Just went over 70K

Ive tried driving harder, and it made it worse not better

i recently changed gas stations since i found a place that has 91, (every place else has 89 and 93)

bottom line is switching to synthetic and plugs are my last hope

lets keep our fingers crossed
