pushing redline

i was racing with some suped up civic this morning. think it was supercharged, pretty good mods. when i was takin him, i was in SS and was pushing redline. i forgot to shift from 2nd to 3rd and i was redlining pretty hard.

it took me about 4 seconds to see the tach bouncing at 7000. did i really f**k up my engine? i'm usually revin it to 5-6000 rpms... am i driving too hard?
i know the stress on tranny but i mean stress on the engine? i was heavy footing the gas... whats the best way to race.. slammin the gas or steady pressure, it is an automatic.
thanks..

You should be fine... hitting the rev limiter once or twice won't cause any damage... I just wouldn't make a habit out of it. You're not causing any damage driving it up to 5k or 6k RPMS.....

It happens to me once pushing it to 7100RPM, forgot to shift to 3rd. It was with a Cadillac Concours 95/98. I won off the line after 70 km/h to 110km/h. I think the computer cuts off the gas when it reaches above a certain point which I think is 7200-7300RPM.

Well, good or not, for sure not, that's why it is REDline.

i was at about 7000 moving really slowly upward past redline.. i think the shakin on the tach needle was the gas cutoff...

i'm still a lil freaked out

do you think damage was caused by going to 7000?

I was in a race before with a Maxima and did the same thing, accidently forgot to shift from 2nd to 3rd in SS. I hit the rev limiter and noticed almost immediately because I stopped accelerating and the car felt funny ... That was over a month ago and I've noticed no ill effects from doing it so far (*crosses fingers*)... The whole reason for a rev limiter is to prevent you from doing something just like that. Like juniorbean said, don't make a habit of it ... But once shouldnt be a big deal. I usually don't rev my engine over 3000 rpms though unless I really have a reason to. Call is overly cautious, but I still think its better for the engine to rev low most of the time and only open up when you really need the extra power. This comes from advice from my father who has taken two Japanese cars well over 275,000 miles with both cars still running when he got a new car.. (at over 14 years old on both). One is an '88 Acura Legend Coupe that my brother is driving now! Thats just my opinion, could be wrong but who knows!

i wouldnt worry about bringing the engine up to(not past) redline, it wont hurt it, its designed to go that high with out damaging it. prolonged exposer to it like many miles many times might start to deminish its life span but for the most part the only thing you are doing is wasting gas. i have a 2000 tl with 100k on it and its as fas as the day i bought it (new)and mine sees the redline daily!!!!

You don't like the sound of the engine purring when you hit around 4500 rpms? I love that sound!

Same here, 2000 TL with 124,000 miles. Does not use any oil at all and I hit VTEC at least twice a day but not redline too much. Hell I just ordered headers! Runs like the day I bought it.
