Purchasing a used Acura TL advice
Purchasing a used Acura TL advice
Not sure where to place this thread.
I have a 2000 Acura TL but in 2024, I think I am going to look for a newer version (and sell 2000 TL to son).
I heard it is best to get a 2010 or newer due to the transmission issues with older TL models. Although if an older version had a recent tranny rebuild, that would be OK, too?
another question: if I purchase a used TL, should I also assume and budget for a timing belt job? Because it may be difficult to learn when/if the timing belt was previously replaced. Maybe mechanic can take a peak at the timing belt without removing the housing?
Thanks!!!

The 2000-2003 had issues with the transmission. It is best to look at replacing it with a BAYA model from a 2006-2007 Honda Accord. THAT is the real fix for older TLs. If a RECENT rebuild was done, if it was done by a quality shop you can figure on 40k-80k miles at most before it goes again. that is the SAFE bet.
In regards to the timing belt, they need to be done every 100-115k miles. The issue with used is you need receipts with mileage to be able to verify that it has been done. Without that assume it needs to be done ASAP. And no, as in NO you cannot tell anything by looking under the timing belt cover. It jsut keeps dust and dirt out and everything will look like new, but you have no idea what the mileage really is.
