Problem after Resonator Removal

Well I pulled out the resonator last weekend, and minus a question with the grill, everything went fine. I love the sound too.

Later that night, I pulled up to a teenager driving a 2002 Avalon XLS who decided he wanted to try racing. I didn't even bother switching to SS at the time and just had a car length on him by the time I was at 70. Not to miss my turn, I slowed off to turn left at the next light. The most I got up to was about 80. What I noticed though was immediately afterwards the Check Engine light started flashing, about 3 times and then disappeared.

I've raced the car plenty of times before with no problems, so I wasn't sure what to make of this one...

The next day I was getting on the I-80, when I accelerated hard off the ramp, and again the Check Engine light flashed a few times, and then disappeared.

I ended up taking the car for about a 2 hour drive down to campus again, no further problems. No more check engine lights... just a strange curiosity as to what is going on with the car.

It's eventually going to the dealership, but the nearest Acura is about 50 minutes away and it wont be for another week or two - so any insight or speculation would be appreciated.

never heard of a flashing CEL...

Be comfortable in knowing that removing the intake resonator had absolutly no affect on the vehicle other than audiable.

I would just dismiss it and move on, not like the dealer will be able to reproduce it.

Hey revanche, since you removed your resonator box i have a question for you. When your car is idling, do you hear a loud low-pitched hum? Thanks. (just wondering if everyone's having this problem like me). -Shawn

there shouldnt be a huming sound, there should be a sucking sound when the engine is cold but it should go away. there shouldnt be a humming sound though

There is a sort-of-loud hum at idle with a CAI or a removed resonator. Its there all the time, you can only hear it at idle though. Its hard to describe, almost like a hydro-electric power generator if anyone had heard one before...

but its not a "problem" as you describe it, its a normal characteristic of that specific MOD. In fact, i kinda like the sound

I'm going to check in the morning to make sure that the air filter is fitting correctly. No reason to assume its not.

Now, with respect to the humming... perhaps... but to be honest - I wouldn't complain much if it was. A few months ago before I bought the TL, I was driving a Mercury Sable with almost 100k on it. Whenever you started that car, the engine sounded like it was going to explode.

Anything less is warmly accepted.

I don't think we should encourage this. Once those guys from the lambo door group buy get done, they are going to try this instead.

Why don't we just setup a seperate topic for all the things you should NOT put or use on your TL?

I actually had this problem before after I cleaned out my K&N once. It would start making the noise about 5 sec after I'd start the car, and it sounded like someone was rubbing his finger around the edge of a giant glass of water (Mr. Wizard style).

I was bringing it in that next day anyways for an oil change and brought that up. They looked inside for like 2 min and then showed me how the intake box wasn't perfectly closed all the way. They just tightened all of the clamps and the sound went away.

Hope that helps.
