gs, because it will down shift right away and not shift out of first for you, also you the gear it is in due to the location of the shifter

maybe no votes because the rest of us know how hard you guys are being on the trans-and are not going to encourage its destruction

I vote you use D5 until you have completed a track day school

just bought the car with a bad tranny (not bad for 100k and original)(just a little harsh shifts right now) knowing it will have to be replaced soon (can do it myself) much rather have fun driving then babying it

I'm too afraid $ to mess up the tranny on this car to even bother to try...

but in my 1970 SS 396 El Camino... that's a different story... he he he.. I'm older and wiser now (thankfully) so it doesn't even break the speed limit much anymore but it launches hard and manually move through the gears on the TH400 just fine.... ahh good ole american muscle - now there's a tranny that holds a 458 whp and doesn't blink all day long....

fries: are you a covered VIN on the trans or you have a spare one laying around?
IMO the gate allows the possibilty of going into N accidentally with negative results

for sporty driving, (not drag racing), use SS and have all the fun you want
While it doesnt downshift thru the gears for you--when stopping it does go into 1st- some years will also go into 2nd while in SS mode

The computer prevents overrev on up AND downshifts so you can click the lever all you want but its just a signal processor-and wont shift unless it will stay in rpm range- a warning blinking of the current gear number tells you
Not a real direct cable to trans setup
Check the owner book for speed limits on shifts

Thats good to know about the computer-supervised downshift. Still, I'm afraid to downshift much in SS out of fear for the transmission. Gate shifting in an 02 will allow you to control the first gear upshift, but the gate progression is kind of awkward.

Occasional upshifting through the gears in SS while winding it out is fun, but the best use for SS is just to keep the trans from upshifting when you let up on the throttle, like when heading into a turn.

Had an 09 TSX as a loaner the other day-the paddle shifters on those allow complete control of 1st & 2nd and is kind of fun. Plus it wasn't my car so I downshifted it plenty

I voted GS cause I like how you get to control if its in 1st or 2nd.

but for street driving, I use SS if I need to hold gears. I just use GS for stop & go traffic or parking lots.

unfortunely it is not a covered vin its about 37,000 car vins over what acura extended the warrenty on (and i am only at 102k), and i have already called the two local dealers and acura customer care to see if they would goodwill it but there too cheap but anyways i can get a rebuilt tranny from honda for wholesale cost and do it myself with a LIFT so it's alot easyier to do then on the ground

My 03 TL-S was not covered under the extended warrenty when the tranny blew last year but I went to Acura of Concord and they got Acura to pay for 90% of the new. I guess I got lucky but keep looking for a good dealership.

yeah there is only 3 dealerships in the metro denver area and i have all ready called two and both say call acura customer care, then acura says they don't have any service records for the car so they will not cover anything so i am just going to do it myself

no it doesn't. It has the same potential to mess up the trans as SS or D5

That said, the main tranny tech at DMD Plano said they thought that D5 had more of a negative impact on the downshifts as it happens a bit slower than gate shifting - meaning there is a bit more oil starvation. Not to sure about this, but since the tranny does shift differently in D5 (auto) than gate shifting I guess this could be possible.

In the case of how I gate shift, I do believe that D5 is worse. The reasoning is that I will downshift in to 2nd or 3rd, but I almost never actually floor it at that point. Wereas in D5 the downshift happens as a response to flooring it ie. meaning under hard acceleration.
