Pothole breaks wheel

Well, I was done in by the PA Turnpike - some massive pothole took out my left front RonJon Chrome Inspyre - a piece of the outter rim broke off. The amazing thing is that the tire did not go flat and I did not know it broke until I got home (driving another 40 miles at 70 + MPH.

So the alignment I just got is probably for shit and now I will be out another 350, and maybe another tire

Talk about an expensive cummute...SUX big time

Anyone else ever bust a wheel in a pothole ?? Were you able to recover the cost from the State/turnpike, etc ????

I will try to put up a pic later

Problem with getting reimbursed is that the DOT has to have known about the pothole and had a reasonable amount of time to repair it. I kinda understand their point, they don't patrol the highways 24-7 looking for them.

Best you can do is try and see what they say.

Where was it on the turnpike? I regularly travel between Bedford and West Chester.

I hit a pothole on Front St in Harrisburg a few years back when they were repaving...pendot didn't reimburse me.

I'd call the turnpike and at least try to get compensated. I doubt you'll see a dime, but at least they'll fix the problem.

If they whine, bring up the turnpike rate hike from last year

Pennsylvania is known for it's lousy roads. The second you cross into Maryland or Jersey, there's a distinct difference in the road system. My area has gotten better...big renovations on 81 around Harrisburg and up into WB/Scr, 283 was recently fixed.

I bent my rim really bad that way, and blew out a tire. The town wouldn't give me any money

I tried in Jersey and after 6 months of review they came back and said they did not have enough notice to repair the pothole. My word against theirs. Funny thing was the weekend before I got their final review I was driving on I-78 outside Jersey City and there was a road crew filling a pothole on a Sunday....which surprised me because I didn't think Sunday was in the vocabulary of a state union worker unless it means double or triple overtime. My guess is they had too many complaints that they had to fill the potholes otherwise they'd be paying a lot of $$$ to repair/replace wheels.

i think you need to call ronjon and see why their wheels crack open. i smell a manufacturing defect. rims should bend, not be brittle and snap into pieces. it's a safety issue.

Same thing in Cleveland

Did a new tire in a couple years ago in the city of cleveland Ohio. Took then three months to reply with some law that was full of hooey. Lucky I had road hazard protection on the tire. Bet our potholes are biger than yours in PA , and we pay more than your do .

Here is what the PA Turnpike sent to me:
.
.
.
"Please be advised that the law 42.PA.C.S.A 8522 (b) (5) prohibits the payment of property damage (tires, rims, etc.) resulting from pavement conditions created by natural elements. Therefore becaue of this, no reimbursement can me made for a claim of this type"

yeah, the new RonJon wheel wasn't in the budget - oddly enough, the tire seemed OK..but I'm gonna keep an eye on it for a while....I have it mounted now, so we'll see what happens

As I said before a same type of bull manure they gave me in Cleveland. they won't admit that they won't or can't keep up their roads..

sorry to see your loss. that sucks man. thoughs are pretty expensive wheels too. Vegas is pretty bad too. the road stays nice for a little then they start to dig it back up cause of the construction. i just wished one day these guys would realize to dig it up once and leave it alone.

on the cracking note. it depends on the type of wheel and how its made. cast wheels will only give to a certain point. once it goes beyond that point it will shatter and crack. ive seen a wheel shatter in 3 pcs. cause they hit a large pot hole on the road. was pretty bad. i wish i had pics. cast is bascially a mold that aluminum is poured in and cooled. so there might be some slight imperfections that why sometimes it just shatters into nothing like a pot.

Forged wheels will most times bend. they have more leeway of not cracking.forged is a made with high pressure forging machine that utimately makes sure all the imprefections and aluminum is much tighter and stronger. but the price of the wheel is much higher.

sorry about your loss man. i know how it feels to see your pride and joy get destroyed. at least it did not bend any of the suspension components.

It cost me 250 to repair the wheel and another 230 for another tire so im basically out 500 bucks. Caltrans denies there was a pothole where i damaged my wheel tanks for nothing caltrans my taxes hard at work.
