The police pulled me over for my comptech exhaust and gave me a fix it ticket. They said it was illegal in california to have ANY exhaust muffler which is aftermarket. I also got a ticket for my intake which they said was illegal as well despite the CARB certification. They want me to put my stock parts back on before 9/4/01. Is there any way that I can fight this bull****? It is complete bull**** because Acura sells comptech parts. I was very pissed off when they did this to me. It happened in Saratoga because the cops in Saratoga have nothing better to do. Do not drive in Saratoga with your modded TL late at night, my friends have been pulled over in their cars too. The cops are anal because there is no crime in saratoga and they have to give out BS tickets instead. For all i care they can all rot in hell!

that sounds familiar...I got hit too. In irvine, ca. I was already in my condo unit parking lot and turned off the engine...then they turn on their lights. "Please remained seated," I calling for backup...(two patrol cars are needed to write a modified exhaust ticket). The officer asked do you know you have a modified exhaust?...daha.

That sucks for the intake ticket. The cops in Irvine are refless in giving no helmet tickets to kids on bikes as well. Also, the irvine cops won't sign off the correction due to "ill equip facilities"...had to bring to CHP to sign off (it's no charge).

How did they know you had an intake? did they actually made you pop your hood?

 

You can either go to the police station and speak to either the Captain or Sergeant and show them the C.A.R.B. sticker and they should sign off on it. As for the exhaust, you will have to prove that is is less than 95db to be legal. You might want to call Comptech to see if they have something that shows it is less than 95db.

 

thanks for the help guys; the thing is that I showed the cops that pulled me over the CARB certification and they said that I still need a closed box instead of an "open air filter element."

saratoga cops are the dumbest idiots, when the TL first came out and not many people got HIDS, i was pulled over by a saratoga woman cop and she said that they were aftermarket bulbs. I told her they were HIDs and they come stock with the car and she was like "well that's your opinion" in a disdainful tone.

I never expected that this would happen to me out of all people esp because i got the comptechs.

 

Boy that sucks thank god cops dont bother us about our cars in Nyc. but the only thing they do is harras us....... they dont care about the cars

 

Take it to court, who know, you might sue them for it too.

 

When dealing with cops you must do all your haggling very quickly and up front. If you are wrong, the first thing you should do is say that you know you are wrong and that it was a stupid thing to do. If you are not wrong, as in this case, you can't do much. But once the cop writes the ticket he has to give it to you. So once you are already getting a ticket you might as well be a ****head right back! Its not illegal to treat a ****head cop as such.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll win if you fight it... but its definitely BS that you have to waste your time.

Umm. how do they think exhaust shops do business? If it weren't legal to sell, then they would either not sell the parts in the state or they would come with a FAT disclaimer.

And who ever said anything about open vs. closed intake? If it passes smog.. it passes smog..

I wonder what the law says about having hidden cup holders.. "Step out of the car sir... " "But, but..." "SIR! Step out of the vehicle.. turn away from me and walk back towards my voice! You are being arrested for concealed cup holders! Now DOWN ON THE GROUND!"

That seems like complete bullsh!t. The question that comes to my mind is, are Harley's illegal? There's no way your car could be louder or more disturbing than a Harley. Don't get me wrong, I think nothing sounds better than a Harley but they're damn loud.

my brother got pulled over the other day for driving with his tv on and the cop said "oh and get rid off that exhaust because it is illegal to have an aftermarket exhaust" well all i got to say is that is the biggest bull**** i have ever heard.

 

I didn't think anyone would get pulled over with these "no-sound" Comptechs. Did you do anything to the Comptech exhausts to up the sound? You didn't do anything like take out the cats or anything, did you? I'm just curious.

I would contact Comptech and get some documentations that says the exhausts are legal in CA. Then show it to a cop or CHP and have them sign it off. If not, you should just go straight to the court w/ the documentation and show the judge that it IS legal to have those exhausts. You'd have to go to the court anyways even if the cop signs off on the ticket. It is a hassle but it's gotta be done.

Some cops could be very anal and IGNORANT! I hate those cops that are ignorant! I too was pulled over so many times in my previous car for my Greddy PE. Everytime I showed the cop the 50 state legal certificate and I was let go. But the third time, the cop wouldn't buy it... and gave me a friggin fix it ticket. Damn it!

BTW, I've never heard anyone getting a ticket for the intake. That's a new one. You should be off the hook by showing the CHP the CARB# on the intake.

Sounds to me like the Saratoga general fund coffers are getting low, and they're trying to enhance the budget with BS offences.

Ohio is known for cops giving out lots of speeding tix, but at least they don't hassle us like these clowns in Saratoga.

Print out a copy of the Law regarding the LEGAL requirements on the exhausts.....when u get pulled over..show the cop the document...then he/she has nothing to say...
Not all modified exhausts are illegal...there's a certain size..and the loudness of the noise from the exhaust that's illegal..

I did not do anything. I was coming back from San Francisco, and you know how the comptechs get a little more deeper and louder (when accelerating from a stop) after you have been driving for a while on the highway? I just got off the highway, a cop was next to me at the red light and he heard the subtle sound of the exhausts. He also, of course, saw them. I do not have the receipts for my exhaust or intake; what should i do about that?

 

cops dont ticket harley's because thats what the motorcycle cops ride...at least here is SF...
