Pics - My car on 1 coat of 3M SMR and two coats of Zaino ZFX/Z5

It's pretty, it's sooo pretty. My arms are d@mn tired. Gonna try to do a few more coats of Z2 before tomorrow.

Here's a shot of the hood with the sun starting to go down. Oh and yes, my car is silver, which makes the reflection that much harder to achieve. I think if my car was black, you'd think you were sitting in the guys living room across the street.

Looks good Neil,
Are you sure Dawn will strip of Zaino? I thought I read on the detailing forums awhile back that it didn't, you would have to use iso alcohol.

Nope Dawn doesn't strip Zaino. The 3M Swirl Mark Remover removes enough Zaino for my liking. I didn't really care how much Zaino I removed, so long as the shine was there.

Abrasives, like 3M Finesse It or isopropyl alcohol, like you said. Isopropyl would be the easiest way.

Thanks everybody for the compliments. Makes my work worth it.

I'm going into Zaino overload this week. 1 coat of Z2 each night till my arms fall off or I run out of product. Then I'll take some more pics.

I gotta get some closeups at night under parking lot lights so you can see that there are no more scratches.

Why would you want to take the zaino off.. I thought the more coats the better.. Or is it after awhile you have to remove the zaino layers and start over again..

Looks GREAT . You make me want to 3M mine as well. How much of the clearcoat did you take off using that compound...and how do you know how long to use it for?

Neil, why are you using 3M SMr instead of Zaino's one? Are 3M products better? I have whole set of Zaino products at home, even including the washing shampoo. Please advise cause warm weather is approaching and I'm sick of the way my car looks like.

The main reason I did what I did, is that I have some minor microscratching, straight line scratches in the clear coat. These are scratches that can really only be seen at night under bright parking lot lights. The 3M SMR helps to round off the edges of the scratches, and helps to fill the scratches a bit. I didn't really want to start over, but in order to help minimize the amount of scratches, I had to use the SMR.

I have no idea how much of the clear coat I removed, nor do I care t know. 3M SMR is the least abrasive of any of their products.

Assuming you know how to use an orbital, you would know when it's done, when the material, SMR or whatever, has completely dried to a fine haze. 3Ms abrasive material gets smaller and less abrasive as you continue to polish, so it won't hurt to leave it on for a bit. I think I did my hood, splitting it up into three panels and I spent about 3 mins per panel.

3M SMR is not a polish, it's more of a compound. It's useful for removing blemishes from the paint, mainly minor swirling. I didn't have any swirls, but the microscratching was getting to me.

You are fine with the Z products you have. They'll work just fine. I'm just obsessed with getting the perfect shine.

Zaino convert - thanks to this board

As a previous Zymol zealot (BMW M3, Expedition), I was really encouraged to see people (NSZNEXT and others) post on this site about Zaino products.

Zymol was always high in PITA factor, looked great, but only for a month or so.

SO, I rang the local Zaino rep, met him at a Viper meet he was attending, and he hooked me up with the works. I used the new ZFX accelerator (cold weather was on the way) with Z2 after a full claybar experience on my new WDP TLS. Car looks great, feels great and is much more dust resistant (Z6) than zymol - which I think attracts every particle of dust within a mile. AND it's really easy to use. Thankfully, the She-E-O had just replace all the white fieldcrest towels with a bunch of RL towels!

I liked it so much, I did a full service on my wife's Camry, which had been somewhat neglected for awhile. I too used a little 3M SMR to remove some blemishes, but hte claybar did a number on water spots. WOW - what a difference. Both cars look great. I'm now just waiting to see how long it will last, but if the claims are true on these boards, I'm a happy man.

Thanks for the reviews and recs!

Shiney, Happy person in Texas,
Brad
