Cool Picking the right car for the money

Hey,

I wanted to ask what you guys think is a better deal. Im looking to buy a new car and I love the new Tl-s, but they are so rare with the navi so I was thinking of getting the new 2002 Maxima with navi etc.

Which one is a better deal?

Thanks.

You will biased opinions here since this is an Acura board just like you would if you go to the maxima board. Personally, I would choose the TL-S because it has better resale value, customer service is great (Park Ave Acura), IMO TL-S exterior and interior is way better then the maxima, maxima has ugly-a$$ taillights, etc...These are just my opinions and I am sure somebody that has own both can go into more details. Good luck

Denis:

Why would 02 cars be rare with the navi? If you are in Canada, BTW, you cant get any TL car with navi from the dealer. It is not an available option. But if you are in the US, i have not heard of any shortage of TL with navi option, for an extra $2000.

You hit it right on the a$$ with these ugly Nissan tails. It's like they design a car, and couldn't figure out what to do with the rear end, and just doodled with it. They're ugly.

I don't know where you're located but there are tons of TL's and TL-S at the dealer that I go to.

If you want a stick, Maxima SE probably is the BEST choice... but TLS is THE BEST otherwise....

it's a NIssan. good car, but driving it feels so "wannabe-ish." don't mean to sound snotty, but prestige and design counts a bit.

I have an '01 TL while my brother has an '00 Maxima SE. Both are nice cars but hands down I prefer my TL. Before this Maxima he had a 5 speed '96 Maxima SE. That was an awesome car! Having the 5 speed matched up to Nissans V-6 is fun to drive. If I am not mistaken the new '02 Maximas have 255 HP, not sure if you can get a 5 speed with that or not. Bottom line, if you have to have the 5 speed, the Max is the way to go. IMO the Max is not as well made and has lower resale.

There are lots of TL with Navi.
TL has HID lights
TL has higher resale value
TL has non ugly A$$ tail lights
TL has better customer service (Power Associates survey)

Just traded my Maxima SE ('90, 5 speed) in on a TL-S. Even though my old one was a great car for 11 years, I didn't even consider a new one, purely because of the way they look . . . FUH - GLEE!

Here's a little less biased (albeit very long) opinion: I've got one of each in the garage, and I would be hard pressed to pick one to trade in.

I love the TL-S for its power, smoothness and a more luxurious feel. Navi, HID lights, 6 disc in-dash and 5 spd auto were not avail on the Max until this year (5 spd auto is still not avail).

That said, until I can get a TL-S with a manual transmission, my auto TL-S will continue to be my 2nd favorite car in the garage (by just a bit). Sure, the SS is nice, but it still shifts through automatic transission fluid, so it's not quite the real thing.

The TL-S has the Max beat hands down on re-sale value. I've had excellent service from my local Nissan dealer over the years - I can't comment on my Acura dealer, as it hasn't required service yet.

Some folks get pretty worked up about the Maxima's distinctive looks - I think it looks pretty good, but not many folks here share my views......to each their own opinion.

My 2000 Max has plenty of go power - but it's not nearly as quick as the TL-S. My '96 Max felt quicker than the 2K, even though it had 32 fewer horses - could be the extra 300 lb. Nissan gave the 2K model over the 4th gen.

The 2002 Max has adds another 33 hp to my 222 HP, with minimal weight gains - it should be about as quick as the TL-S, depending on how many shifts it takes to get you to 60 mph. 1/4 mile times should be close - basically it should come down to the driver's ability.

The 2002 also includes a 6 spd manual (std on the SE), available 7 spkr Bose w/6 disc indash (beats the 5 spkr TL-S - why aren't there any "A" pillar speakers??). Also avail is a $1999 Navi system that I haven't heard any good/bad reviews on. Yes, it still has the questionable rear suspension, and IMO, the tail lights are even worse than the ones on my 2000 model. I'd like to retrofit those headlamp assys to my 2K, though.

Drive them both - if you're the type who has to shift your own gears (like me), the Maxima could be the right match for you - if you feel that the Max isn't "prestigious" enough, or want a bit more luxury, you may want to look at a 325/330 or an A4 or maybe a S60 for a bit more $$ (all avail w/5 spd).

If the auto works for you, the TL-S can't be beat for fun/value for your $. Looks great, drives great, handles great - what's not to like? To compare apples to apples, you should compare the TL-S to the new I-35.
