Philips 6000k D2S in D2R Sockets

I am finally prepared to break down and replace the stock bulbs on my 2003 TLS-Navi.

I have been talking with suvlights.com and the sales rep is suggesting I get D2S instead of D2R because they are brighter. Additionally, he suggests the fit is absolutely direct and no mods are required.

Can anyone here tell me why I should not stick with the D2R's?

The guy at suvlights.com who told you that is wrong. Modification is required to fit the D2S into your D2R socket. You have to cut a piece on the plastic. Now the reason why you shouldn't get the D2S because they are brighter is pretty much that reason. People are already complaining about how bright the HIDs are and Congress is starting to listen. We should not do anything to contribute to the problem. I am all for the 6000k upgrade, as I am getting the bulbs, but I do not want to give people more reason to tone down the HID output. Already the 2003s have been toned down compared to the 2001 and 2002, before we know it...HID brightness will only be 10% more than halogens. I can get you a better price than what suvlights are giving you. Just email me and I will give you the person's email.

Exactly, you have to cut out a notch on the base of the D2S bulb so that it will fit inside the housing. If you get the D2R it will be a direct swap, no modifications needed.

As for the brightness between the D2S and D2R, that has been debated but I stick to my theory. Go with the D2R because the housing is designed, optically, for a D2R bulb, if you introduce a D2S, the beam pattern it produces won't be reflected optimally. KEEP IN MIND, this may or may not be noticeable. Just my .02 cents.

peiqinglong, e-mail sent 10 minutes ago.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I know this is one of those debate forever questions.

In my mind I could not justify getting something other than D2R since that is the bulb type I would be replacing.

Guess it is time to price shop a little.

This is disappointing. I thought some people here really liked suvlights.com.

Oh well...

It's basically your guy Paul! Don't worry...I wasn't stealing your credit either. Anyone who asked I've been telling them to mention you as the person who recommend the guy.

I recently upgraded to the D2Rs too. And the color difference between your stock bulbs are simply amazing. I would just stick with the D2Rs since D2Ss you will need to do that little modification. Why bother yourself with more work?

I just ordered a pair of D2S. So what's a little extra work. But at least I heard it's brighter than the D2R.

Hey Binh, when you get yours installed, we will compare and see if that extra work really paid off.

i am facing a problem that my HID lights will be in different color when i get it back next week...
coz they will replace my right one...and it will be in different color...compare to my left

As a rule of thumb, you should always replace the both of them at the same time.

Correct, modification is required but this "modification" can be done by a two year old...

But FYI, rules on HID's won't change...Ya, people are complaining, but guess how many accidents HID's have caused?...

Give up?

Some of your information is correct. But, D2S bulbs will be brighter(to your view and oncomming traffics). The only difference between a D2R bulb is the notch and the glare strip on the glass of the D2R bulb, which is designed to block a little light(so there is no question on whether the D2S bulbs are brighter). Once the knob is cut off, the D2S bulb is basically(Except not having the glare strip) a D2R bulb, therefore beam pattern is the same as with an actual D2R, only brighter...Thats my 2 cents..
