Pet peeves....

Can't believe no one said this one yet..
Holes for foglights that don't exist.
Others include: Introducing a 00 model just one year after a total revision of the platform with things that should have been on the car to begin with: 5 speed auto, side impact airbags.. DVD navi thats not backwards compatible.... Still no memory seats for the 01 model year. Once rare simulated woodgrain steering wheel now available as an option on your garden variety Accord.. Once powerful 180 watt stereo now available in Nissan Sentra's. And also thinking that amber lenses just plain look better to Joe Q. Public, than the red/white lenses, even though they are used to distinguish the Inspire from the lesser Saber model.

moonroof rattles over every bump
sportshift shifts from 1>2 automatically
no OEM foglights offered
huge gap b/t the wheel & fender
insufficient horsepower & torque
Other than that, it is perfect.

1. Trunk lid sunken and not flush with body
2. Big gaps between hood and front bumper (13mm) vs my '92 Accord of 4mm
3. Headlights, hood, and bumper not aligned and flushed
4. Door, fender and A pillar not flush.
5. Rear pull-out arm rest wiggles when laid down on seat
6. Can't find a comfortable seat position
7. Power seats move too fast. I need an inch and it moves a yard.
8. Passenger side windshield wiper can't be lifted up.
9. Paper speakers, grocery bag subwofers
I can't wait till the quality survey gets mailed to me.
Just my $0.02..

Sammy, define:
9. leather very easily damaged
scratched up beyond repair?
I hate the fingerprints on black parts of the door also. Workaround = shut it with your right elbow if you are wearing long sleeves.

The sport shift is pretty weak in this car. Didn't think so when I first drove it, but after having driven an IS300 last week, the TL shifts are decidedly unaggressive.
In the IS shifts are pretty much standard sport sedan fare when in auto, but shifting for yourself results in a very satisfying quick and firm shift that you IMMEDIATELY feel in the seat of your pants. No worries, though - I hope to take delivery of a TL by the end of the week! :-)

Smarter:
1. SOHC - Pet peeve of mine too, but it seems to be doing a better job than the DOHCs of the competitors.
2. Using Accord's base - which gives its detractors a point to carp on - but the upside is that you get time-tested componentry and also cheaper cost for the same quality stuff. Also, years later when/if things start failing, you get replacement stuff at cheaper costs...which is a big plus.
Additional points from me:
3. Using vinyl on visible areas of the seats of a near-luxury car - should have raised the price by a couple of hundred dollars and avoided doing that.
4. Using "simulated wood" in the interiors - giving the TL detractors another point to carp on - "real wood" again would have cost the manufacturer another couple of hundred dollars at the most - since this is a mass produced car.
5. Acura uses a 36-step painting process but puts on only 2 coats 1 bake when even the lowly Integra has a 3-coat 3-bake painting process. The TL incidentally has an additional color-matched coating on the lower parts of the body that acts against paint chipping. The RL/MDX etc have a 5-coat 4-bake painting process.
6. Moving manufacturing to the US...somehow even though I found my car to be perfect fit-and finish wise and tight as a drum, I have had very good luck with Japanese built cars in the past - better than US built Japanese cars.
7. A front-end resemblance to the Accord. The Acura designers could have done a better job at visually diffrentiating the TL further from the Accord especially since NOT A SINGLE BODY PANEL is shared with the Accord. They should have maintained a family resemblance with big-brother RL and not with the garden-variety Honda Accord - as was done by the last generation 3.2/2.5TL (even though the last generation TL was a dud in every other respect). Infiniti I-30/Lexus ES300 have done a much better job at differentiating their cars from their garden variety makes even though they are closer to the garden variety brands than the TL is to the Accord...
8. Absence of Foglights.
9. Absence of a trip computer.
10. Absence of Memory seats/mirrors which is a pet peeve of mine since my wife is 5'1" and I am 6'1".
But things I like about my TL:
1. HID lights at this pricepoint.
2. Having a fantastic double wishbone suspension in the front and a multi-link double wishbone suspension in the back unlike its competitor, the ES300 which uses the cheap and inferior strut suspension in the front and the back. The presence of double wishbones would ensure that putting on better rubber would enhance the driving experience rather than over-whelming the suspension (like the ES300).
3. Having a class exclusive 5-speed adaptive automatic transmission with sportshift which is not borrowed from its garden variety sibling (Accord) unlike its competitors who have lifted their ordinary and common 4-speed automatic transmissions directly out of their lower brethren (ES300 from the Camry V6 while the I-30 has lifted it from the Maxima).
4. Having a size diffrentiation in the Engine from the Accord unlike its competitors (ES300/I-30) who have lifted near identical versions of engines from their lower brethren. The ES has added variable valve timing to the exact same Camry V6 engine.
5. Value & high quality for the money which is un-matched by any other car at this or even slightly higher pricepoints. Worth every penny.
6. Having a sliding arm-rest and also rear air-vents for passengers in the back.
7. A pretty rigid body. Part of the rigidity of the body is due to having non-folding rear seats due to which one loses some utility in exchange for better handling potential.
8. Having a state of the art DVD based navigation system containing map info of the entire US (which when it is fully updated would be fantastic) while its competitors like the ES300 does not even offer them and the one in the I-30 soldiers on with slower and lower capacity CD based NAV system.
9. Having triple-sealed windows with full frame and the rear-windows go all the way down unlike its competitors (ES300/I30) where the door design does not permit the glass in the rear windows to go all the way down and sticks up over the rear-windows by a few inches even when fully down.
10. Having a highly fuel efficient engine for its size when the smaller and less powerful engines of its competitors cart along lighter bodies while providing worser fuel mileage. That's impressive engineering.

Come on fellas, don't diss the Accord base; even Lexus uses the Avalon for it's GS base. The Accord V6 pees on Camry & Maxima.

No Fog or driving lights RL&CL have HID lights & got them.
No daytime runnning lights like Can model.
No real trip computer with the nav that tells miles to empty & fuel economy like in Lincoln how much extra would it cost with a Nav system about $100.00
No rear reading lights for passengers.
No light under hood for engine.
I could pick all day but I love this car.

I agree with what has ben posted. Anyone know how to tke care of the scuff marks on the side skirts? I would also add that my 96 Grand Am had DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS and this 30k car does not.
Overall I am pleased but a few little changes and this car could have been perfect.

The side mirror heaters should go off automatically after a certain amount of time.
Seat heaters should switch to off when the motor is turned off. You probably don't need them next time you get in the car. But what do I know, I live in the south, never saw seat heaters before.

Come on guys.. lets get some more petty replies.. i'm sure there's more absolutely assinine replies hiding in here somewhere.
correct, Honda is doing more with SOHC than others do with DOHC, and with half the complexity.
Power seats move to fast ?? at least we have 8-way seats.
Wiper can't be lifted up ?? but then someone will whine that there's wind buffeting noises from the side mirror or the other wiper.
Scuff marks from passengers ?? PICK YOUR FEET UP.
could have done XXXX, for a few hundred more.. add up all the XXXX's and you've got a few thousand more. Find a BMW or Benz for $29000. You want the quality and full features of one of those ?? GO BUY ONE.
cupholders don't fit things ?? take the keg out, I keep 32oz drink cups of all sizes in there.. and tin cans and water bottles.
Agree with the mirror heaters tho.. left them on for 2 days once..
But all in all, this is not a $50k car, it's NEAR-Luxury. and for the buck, try hard to beat it. But come on, enough is enough.

UPDATED... since I jotted some things down while waxing my car. PLEASE RE-READ
(1) No OEM fog lights to fill bumper holes
(2) Poor paint thickness, spray quality, front grill blending (I should take pictures of the 8 or 9 bad spots and post them.)
(3) 1<>2 shift automatically in s/s mode
(4) Grade Logic downshifts in s/s mode
(4) Rough acceleration/idling when cold
(5) No heat in passenger seat-back (2000)
(6) Passenger wiper blade can't be fitted with taller winter blade
(7) Windshield washer fluid nozzles on hood
(8) Cloudy-looking headlights
(9) Door molding has tears, windshield molding pulls away from the body leaving a gap.
(10) Stereo could be another notch better, also including dolby type-C
(11) Gas tank should hold 19-20 gallons of fuel
(12) No wood wheel option from dealer
(13) No light in glove box
(14) Map light switches are clunky
(15) Headrests are plain and don't tilt
(16) Armrest slides back too easily (should lock when an arm is on it)
(17) No memory drivers seat
(18) Nothing to grab ahold of to close trunk (must put hand on paint)
(19) Plain engine cover (2000)
(20) Touch-up paint doesn't match at all
(21) Lame CD Holder (non-nav)
(22) "A/C" and "MODE" are not easy to use at night (all other cases the buttons themselves are lit) (non-nav)
(23) Car has alphanumeric name instead of a real name
(24) Pathetic automatic window features (driver's auto down only) lack of windows-up on key fob
(25) No trip computer (MPG, Miles left until tank dry, etc.)
Here are some things that make me happy:
(1) Oil changes are easy because of filter location
(2) The taillights are optically beautiful when lit
(3) The headlights work better than anything I've experienced before (pattern, intensity, color)
(4) The "stick" shift is elegant instead of being a big chunk of plastic with a thumb switch (Toyota)
(5) The seats are very comfortable
(6) The back windows go the whole way down
(7) No exterior antenna or trunk keyhole
(8) Two tripometers

Love the car but here are my complaints.
Most were already mentioned!
1. No light under hood, glove box and rear passengers.
2. Side railings stick out to far, scuff city
3.No body colored mud guards
4.No 17 or 18 inch factory rim option
5.No wood steering wheel
6.No MD option or back up camera from Inspire
7.75% leather seating?
